Better Core Video Embeds plugin for WordPress

The Better Core Video Embeds is WordPress plugin which improves the performance of you websites pages which have Youtube, Vimeo or Daily Motion videos embedded on them using the core WordPress embed block.

Without this plugin, your website will load a lot of content from those services when the page renders, regardless of whether a user actually interacts with a video.

This plugin prevents those resources from loading, apart from the thumbnail image which is shown on the page. When the thumbnail image is clicked, the video content from the associated provider is loaded.

How do I use this plugin?

The beauty of the plugin is that is a progressive enhancement to what WordPress already provides. What this means is that the way in which you embed videos doesn't need to change - the plugin handles the rest. Therefore you can continue to just paste the URL of your video into the WordPress block editor and the plugin will handle the rest of the front end of your site. No changes are made in the editor itself.

How do I control the thumbnail image display for a video?

The image that is displayed is actually pulled from the service where the video was added. Therefore you can just add your thumbnail to your video when you upload it. For example, Youtube allows you to upload a dedicated thumbnail image and it is this image that is used.

Are captions supported?

The WordPress embed block supports adding a caption underneath the video. This plugin also supports the output of this caption beneath the thumbnail.
