Awesome Theology

A curated list of open source software for Catholic theology.

Awesome Theology is a catalogue of free and open source tools that assist the workflow of professional theologians and students taking theology classes in institutions of higher learning. It helps people who use things like GNU/Linux, tiling window managers, and terminal emulators work with things like ancient Christian Latin and Greek.

We include:

• projects hosted on GitHub, GitLab, & elsewhere with full source code transparency
• tools that can be installed as local applications or cloned for local use in some form
• software with simple interfaces & minimal bloat
  • we prefer CLI & TUI, but we tolerate sensible GUI
• utilities that we have tested and actually use to assist our work

• Whitaker's Words - A cleaned, constantly updated version of William Whitaker's WORDS, a CLI Latin dictionary with word parsing.

GUI Bible Study

• BibleTime - QT Sword-based comprehensive Bible study tool with automatic installation of many public domain translations and study resources.
• Xiphos - GTK Sword-based comprehensive Bible study tool with automatic installation of many public domain translations & study resources.

TUI Bible Study

• Diatheke-TUI - whiptail TUI for Diatheke, the CLI frontend for Sword. A bit like a TUI version of BibleTime or Xiphos.

CLI Bibles

• vul - Latin Vulgate in the terminal.
• grb - Greek Bible (LXX & NT) in the terminal.
• kjv - King James Version of the Bible in the terminal.

St. Thomas Aquinas

• AquinasOperaOmnia - Aquinas's opera omnia in parallel Latin & English indexed as a website. Works well in CLI (or GUI) web browsers (e.g. 'elinks /home/[user]/AquinasOperaOmnia/index.html').

Liturgy

• Missal1962 - CLI 1962 Missale Romanum (complete). Incorporates divinum-officium to show propers.
• calrom - CLI liturgical calendar for the Ordinary Form/Novus Ordo.
