This is based on some feedback from a customer on 1.x -- they were referring to the files in our repo root for an easy reference for their configs, but in the 2.x work we've removed those things.
This brings it back, but labels the files as explicitly for
1.x. I think over time we can probably phase them out, likely after the bulk of users have moved to 2.x.
