FAQ
To check the current site, click on the icon to show the popup. Check site will automatically display ratings. If you don’t see the icon, try these steps:
- Verify Check site is installed and enabled
- Click on the puzzle piece in next to the url (Chromium browsers only) or the (Firefox only), and find Check site.
To check a link, right click on the link, and then click on the item in the menu labeled Check link. If the site you are on has disabled the context menu (i.e. Google Docs), you will be unable to check links via the context menu.
If you see that one of the blocklists detected a site that you think is safe, then this means:
- You are on a site other than what you think you are on (I.e. phishing)
- It is a false positive (which is possible)
- The site is not accurately safe
- There is a bug in Check site
- The detection is from the Pornography Blocklist, which only means the site is a pornography site
When you check a link, Check site will tell you if it is a shortened or redirect link. A shortened or redirect link is a link which redirects you via another service (Google does this for their links) or that hides the real destination. Not all shortened or redirect links are bad, but many people do abuse these services for malware, phishing, or tracking.
If Check site detects shortened links on all pages, this may mean your device is infected with malware.
Try running an Antimalware scan, updating your browser and OS, checking for applications or browser extensions you don’t remember installing, and consider resetting your browser.
Try disabling all of your browser extensions, testing it, and then enabling them one-by-one and testing after each one.
Also visiting an website like https://example.com or https://Wikipedia.org which does not have shortened links, and see if the problem persists.
It is also possible that either;
- All the websites you use have shortened links - if testing a site which definitely does not causes the problem to go away, then this is probably the case
- There is a bug in Check site; you can detect this if Check site says a link goes to somewhere it does not
This is because some lists are cached for offline use, but this has not yet been implemented for all lists. (Yet)
