Following discussion on the steering council mailing list, we seem to agree that we should move away from GA. There doesn't seem to be a consensus about what, if anything, to replace it with. But as I understand it, we might be violating data protection laws like the GDPR by letting Google Analytics collect personal data without asking people for consent. So I'd argue that we shouldn't wait for that decision to do this step.

Thanks @slel. There was a reticence in the steering council thread about hosting something ourselves - no-one is eager to be responsible for maintaing a server. The main alternatives that were suggested there were https://simpleanalytics.com/ and https://plausible.io/ .
