+For those who use WooCommerce regularly, you may have noticed that late last year, they changed all their branding from WooCommerce to Woo. Here is the announcement post:

+The main changes of this rebrand were:
+
+- Instead of woocommerce.com, the domain would be woo.com.
+- The hosted WooCommerce offering on woo.com would be referred to as Woo.
+- More emphasis would be placed on this hosted offering.
+
+## The website after the rebrand
+
+On the website, hardly any trace of the name WooCommerce could be found, as it would exclusively be used to refer to the open source ecommerce plugin for WordPress, a technicality that backfired on them.
+
+The website also more prominently featured the hosted WooCommerce offering, directly competing with Shopify even on pricing. This would allow someone who doesn’t know anything about WooCommerce hosting to create a WooCommerce store and have it hosted on Woo’s platform. They still have this, it just isn’t as emphasized as it is in this screenshot anymore.

+## What went wrong
+
+Even with proper redirects, it’s not possible to know what effects a complete change in domain and naming would have on how the site appears in Google.

+For WooCommerce, it didn’t work out well. After the rebrand, daily traffic went from about 360,000 visits daily to less than 90,000, sometimes dropping as low as 40,000.

+It’s scary to make such a large change. Other websites have done this in the past, and many have had no problem, so without knowing the internals at Google, it’s hard to know exactly what caused this.
+
+## Going back to the WooCommerce name
+
+Not surprisingly, they decided to change the branding back to WooCommerce. The domain went back to woocommerce.com, and most of the wording on the website changed back to WooCommerce from Woo.

+## Lesson learned
+
+If you run a website, be careful about changing the name and domain, especially if people are used to searching the old name. This is likely what hit WooCommerce the hardest, as people search for “woocommerce plugins”, not “woo plugins”.
