[Bug]: Ice Freezing After a reinstall (Built-in upgrade, manually upgrade, downgrade...) #364
Comments
This sounds like a pretty major bug. I'll work on getting a fix for this out as soon as I can. |
same here, at least almost... |
@christiangierschner Are you saying you've tried previous versions of Ice that had worked previously on an older macOS version and now it's failing? |
yes, 10.5 works, 11.0 too and from 11.1 the pref panel freezes |
@christiangierschner Well then it does matter which version of Ice. |
I believe I fixed the issue, but I can't reproduce it on either of my machines, so let me know once the next update is out if the problem still happens. |
Not really.
Even rebooting the system doesn’t solve the problem this time. The settings panel remains broken, even after a restart. Of course quitting and relaunching the app won't help. Since I can't find a workaround, I would have to downgrade to 0.11.3 for now. I attempted to downgrade from version 0.11.4 to 0.11.3 by manually deleting the app, downloading version 0.11.3 from GitHub, and dragging it to the Applications folder. Unfortunately, the app freezes with its settings and permissions panel right after the initial launch following installation similar to the problem during upgrading from 0.11.2 to 0.11.3. Now I have no choice but to try removing everything (e.g., settings, profiles) and performing a clean install to see if this resolves the problem. Everything seems to be working fine after a clean install. There might be an issue with my settings, but I’m certain I did nothing strange nor fancy. |
|
I'm going to treat this as an edge case for now. If people continue to have the same problem, I'll reopen this. |
same issue with updates from 0.11.7 upwards, 0.11.6 is working fine |
If possible, try removing everything (profiles, settings, etc.) and reinstall Ice? |
for the future reader: remove everything from ice (profiles, settings, etc.) and reinstall works |
Adding to this: for an easy way to remove everything while uninstalling at the same time, use AppCleaner or PearCleaner. Both are free. |

Description
After upgrading Ice using the
built-in upgrade feature, the app freezes. While its settings and permissions panels appear, everyting unresponsive, and there is no splitter in the menu bar. By the way, both Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions are granted.Using macOS "Force quit application" or "Acticity Monitor" to quit (not neccessarily force quit) does not help. When Ice quits and launches again, exactly same problem and behaviors.
The only workaround I’ve found is rebooting the Mac, which temporarily resolves the issue. However, the problem reoccurs during next upgrade.
I’ve encountered this issue at least twice: during the upgrade from version 0.11.2 to 0.11.3, and possibly from 0.11.1 to 0.11.2.
Description (update)
The issue isn’t limited to the built-in update feature, nor is it restricted to updates. Manually deleting the app and reinstalling an older version by dragging it into the Applications folder also results in the same problem. This behavior has been observed on Mac when downgrading Ice from 0.11.4 to 0.11.3.
