[Monitors](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_(synchronization\)) prevent blocks of code from simultaneous execution by multiple threads just like Locks. In fact, Locks are sometimes based on Monitors, like in case of C#. Monitors provide a mechanism for threads to temporarily give up exclusive access, in order to wait for some condition to be met, before regaining exclusive access and resuming their task.
