KEP-2170: Add Torch Distributed Runtime #2328

Merged

@andreyvelich andreyvelich commented Nov 15, 2024

Fixes: #2211

I added Torch distributed runtime and more overlays (only-runtimes, only-manager) as we discussed with @tenzen-y and @deepanker13 offline.
Since it might be useful for GitOps to install everything, only manager, or only runtimes.

Please let me know what do you think about it ?
Basically, I added it to allow users just see the default values of this runtime:

Basically LGTM.

Btw, just a suggestion, we can also add pip list command to list packages in this container, making package version visible to users:)

I think, pip list make sense, since it allows users to see all installed packages.

It would be useful to anticipate support for other accelerators like AMD/ROCm, so calling that one like torch-cuda-distributed could help to be more descriptive.

I think, it is a good idea.
However, we are still discussing with @tenzen-y on how we should propagate accelerator type to the runtime labels given that it overlaps with Kueue ResourceFlavor concepts.
As you can see, by default we don't attach any resources to the Trainer container in this pre-training runtime:

@astefanutti Could you create a separate issue so we can track it ?
E.g. support AMD accelerators in Torch Distributed Training Runtime.

@andreyvelich thanks for the feedback, I've just created #2335.

In addition to the resources, it's also the container image set for the runtime that's coupled to the accelerator.

For instance pytorch/pytorch:2.5.0-cuda12.4-cudnn9-runtime makes that training runtime specific to NVIDIA CUDA.

For AMD ROCm, that would need to be something like rocm/pytorch:rocm6.2.3_ubuntu22.04_py3.10_pytorch_release_2.3.0 for example.

Yeah, that is correct. We need to find image that adds support for ROCm.

Can we add testings for those runtimes regardless of this PR or not?

Let me tie the root problem here: kubernetes-sigs/jobset#713

Can we add testings for those runtimes regardless of this PR or not?

I actually want to add E2E tests after we implement the initial SDK for V2: #2324. Since we can leverage our SDK to perform tests.

I was thinking about these E2E tests:

  • /test/e2e/runtimes - Where we just test the existing runtimes without any modification of TrainJob. E.g. the tests might look as follows:
job_id = TrainingClient().train(runtime_ref="torch-distributed")
TrainingClient().get_job_logs(job_id, follow=True)
  • /test/e2e/notebooks - Where we are going to use Papermil to execute tests from our V2 examples. I think the majority of our examples can be represented with Jupyter Notebooks, so Data Scientists can quickly run them.

WDYT about it @kubeflow/wg-training-leads @varshaprasad96 @akshaychitneni @helenxie-bit @Electronic-Waste @saileshd1402 @seanlaii @shravan-achar @kannon92 ?

Should we put this under PyTorch folder so that we can group multiple runtime files

Should we create this subfolder when we support more runtimes ?
I would like us to have discussion on which pre-training runtimes we want to support in upstream.

I was thinking how will the user configure PyTorch version of their choice?

Data Scientists can always override the base image or Platform Engineers can configure runtime with the appropriate torch version.
From my past experience and discussions, usually ML teams try to stitch with a single PyTorch version for all of their ML Development.

Do you see other use-cases ?

In the production team, I think that you are mostly right. But, in the research department, each researcher often uses the different PyTorch versions, IMO.

But the discussion is a separate one. So I think that we can merge this PR in any case.

Could we prepare SDK using a specific E2E directory? I will add control-plane-specific E2E in the /test/e2e.

* Pin Gloo repository in JAX Dockerfile to a specific commit (#2329)

This commit pins the Gloo repository to a specific commit (43b7acbf) in
the JAX Dockerfile to prevent build failures caused by a recent bug
introduced in the Gloo codebase. By locking the version of Gloo to
a known working commit, we ensure that the JAX build remains stable and
functional until the issue is resolved upstream.

The build failure occurs when compiling the gloo/transport/tcp/buffer.cc
file due to an undefined __NR_gettid constant, which was introduced
after the pinned commit. By using this commit, we bypass the issue and
allow the build to complete successfully.
