Defaulting webhook not setting defaults

Hello,

I am trying to create a defaulting webhook these parts of the kubebuilder book:

• https://book.kubebuilder.io/cronjob-tutorial/webhook-implementation.html
• https://book.kubebuilder.io/cronjob-tutorial/running-webhook.html

I also followed the instructions to install cert manager and uncommented all parts in kustomize files with the tag [WEBHOOK] or [CERT-MANAGER].
During startup I see in the logs:

However I do not see it changing the values. The only thing I do differently is I run it using make run and not deploying the image. Could this be a problem?

Is there another way I could troubleshoot it?

In addition to the above questions, I also tried to create a docker image like the guide suggested, but I encountered this error on deploy:

To answer my own question, if I get this correctly, the make run just installs the crds, while make deploy installs the controller with the corresponding features. So it does make a difference whatsoever.
