[6 Oct 2020] WinMan is now Winger

"WinMan" is, if not already obvious, a portmanteau of "window manager". I did not spend a lot of time thinking of a name for a tool I badly wanted to build, ship and start using ASAP.

I liked it enough. Growing up in the 90s, tinkering around with Windows 3.1 and up, "WinMan" reminds me of the filenames of classic applications progman.exe (Program Manager) and fileman.exe (File Manager).

On the other hand, it always bothered me that whenever I try to write an introduction to WinMan, I often feel like I need to declare its pronouns: "it/its".

And then there was something I should have done far earlier: I Googled the name – months after the addon has gone live – and found an Indian tax software company dominating the results. I don't need to compete (weakly) with a commercial entity for search ranking.

So I have renamed my Firefox window manager "Winger", also a portmanteau of "window manager".

Winger.

Like the metal band / team sport position / character from Community.

I like this one quite a lot better.

I hope this change will not inconvenience users of this little addon too much – all nine of you.
