The false positive ODR violation diagnostic for modules have been an annoying problem for a long time. We've received a lot of issue reports about it and I rarely see the reports saying the mechanism find real ODR violations. (a suspicious one may be #61643).

Then in a private chat with MSVC developer, he told me MSVC don't check ODR violations in the global module fragment. This is a surprise to me and I never thought we can proceed by this. I feel this may be a regression at first. But I feel it might make sense due to:

  • Like I said before, there are a lot of false positive ODR violation diagnostic while the true positive diagnostics are much less.
  • On the other hand, given that the things in the global module fragment are mostly from headers, it won't be a regression compared with the era before modules.
  • It is really hard for the compiler to get ODR Hash correct in the GMF due to the complexity of headers and C++. An example may be [C++20] [Modules] False Positive ODR violation diagnostic due to using inconsistent qualified but the same type #78850. While all of us love standard conforming implementation, sometimes it is really hard to get things right.

So I'd like to take the same strategy with MSVC to not check ODR violations in the global module fragment.

Given the fact that this is actually a regression on the standard conformance, I am not sure if people have different opinions.

Previosly we land
085eae6
to workaround the false positive ODR violations in
#76638.

However, we decided to not perform ODR checks for decls from GMF in
#79240 and we land the
corresponding change. So we should be able to remove the workaround now.

The original tests get remained.

This is hiding real bugs, I feel like this is going too far for people who are striving for correctness here.

With this change, this behavior is not even controlled by a flag, so it feels like we are putting this under the rug indefinitely.

Putting the behavior behind a flag does sound like a worthy compromise to me.

Is anyone signing up to use that flag today, on a significant codebase on an ongoing basis, today? Otherwise I'd be inclined to leave it out until there's such a user signing up. I'd rather not add it speculatively.

& might be worth discussing adding the flag in a separate issue, or a PR?

There are two kinds of bugs / issues relevant here:

  1. Clang bugs that this change hides
Here we can add a Frontend flag that disables the GMF ODR check, just so we can keep tracking, testing and fixing these issues.
The Driver would just always pass that flag.
We could add that flag in this current issue.
  2. Bugs in user code:
I don't think it's worth adding a corresponding Driver flag for controlling the above Frontend flag, since we intend it's behavior to become default as we fix the problems, and users interested in testing the more strict behavior can just use the Frontend flag directly.

A frontend only flag looks reasonable. I'll make it later.

This patch follows the suggestion:
- Introduce the CC1 flag `-fskip-odr-check-in-gmf` which is by default
  off,
so that the every existing test will still be tested with checking ODR
  violations.
- Passing `-fskip-odr-check-in-gmf` in the driver to keep the behavior
  we intended.
- Edit the document to tell the users who are still interested in more
strict checks can use `-Xclang -fno-skip-odr-check-in-gmf` to get the
  existing behavior.

[RISCV] Support __riscv_v_fixed_vlen for vbool types. (llvm#76551)

This adopts a similar behavior to AArch64 SVE, where bool vectors are
represented as a vector of chars with 1/8 the number of elements. This
ensures the vector always occupies a power of 2 number of bytes.

A consequence of this is that vbool64_t, vbool32_t, and vool16_t can
only be used with a vector length that guarantees at least 8 bits.

[Clang] [Sema] Handle placeholders in '.*' expressions (llvm#83103)

When analysing whether we should handle a binary expression as an
overloaded operator call or a builtin operator, we were calling
`checkPlaceholderForOverload()`, which takes care of any placeholders
that are not overload sets—which would usually make sense since those
need to be handled as part of overload resolution.

Unfortunately, we were also doing that for `.*`, which is not
overloadable, and then proceeding to create a builtin operator anyway,
which would crash if the RHS happened to be an unresolved overload set
(due hitting an assertion in `CreateBuiltinBinOp()`—specifically, in one
of its callees—in the `.*` case that makes sure its arguments aren’t
placeholders).

This pr instead makes it so we check for *all* placeholders early if the
operator is `.*`.

It’s worth noting that,
1. In the `.*` case, we now additionally also check for *any*
placeholders (not just non-overload-sets) in the LHS; this shouldn’t
make a difference, however—at least I couldn’t think of a way to trigger
the assertion with an overload set as the LHS of `.*`; it is worth
noting that the assertion in question would also complain if the LHS
happened to be of placeholder type, though.
2. There is another case in which we also don’t perform overload
resolution—namely `=` if the LHS is not of class or enumeration type
after handling non-overload-set placeholders—as in the `.*` case, but
similarly to 1., I first couldn’t think of a way of getting this case to
crash, and secondly, `CreateBuiltinBinOp()` doesn’t seem to care about
placeholders in the LHS or RHS in the `=` case (from what I can tell,
it, or rather one of its callees, only checks that the LHS is not a
pseudo-object type, but those will have already been handled by the call
to `checkPlaceholderForOverload()` by the time we get to this function),
so I don’t think this case suffers from the same problem.

This fixes llvm#53815.

Complicated expressions in lldb broke the assumption that the expression is an identifier, thus we got a cast error.
This fix removes that from happening and also fixes the bug that if the identifier is an array itself the last index specified in the input is used to index that variable itself.

e.g 01 SAMPLE-TABLE.
           05 TABLE-DEPTH OCCURS 3 TIMES.
             10 TABLE-ROW OCCURS 3 TIMES.
               15 TABLE-COLUMN OCCURS 3 TIMES PIC 9(8).

Here TABLE-ROW(1, 2) means second element of TABLE-ROW OF TABLE-DEPTH(1).

[lldb] Bugfix in LENGTH(var) [cobol] and STG(var) [pli]

We were encoding 4 bytes of LENGTH data and reading 8 bytes which cause a problem.
Using size_t instead of uint32_t fixes the problem.

[lldb] Fix cast failure in FindFieldInStructArray

The STG function also should include the prefix when counting the size, which for now is 2 bytes for all strings because the PLI compiler doesn't support COMPAT(V3) version.
If in the future we do support it, we would need to fix this again.
