Bed Leveling

Bed leveling is the process of making sure the print bed (the surface that the filament is placed on) is even prior to print in order to ensure that the 3D print can properly adhere to the bed. If your 3D print bed is unleveled, many things can go wrong such as the filament not sticking to the bed or having noticeable gaps in the print.

Getting Started

If you haven't already, make sure you have Google Chrome setup for serial connection with the 3D Printer. Please see the local server guide for more details.

Open the examples/bed-level/bed-level.html file in your web browser. The page will provide instructions on how to level your print bed.

Leveling the Bed

Step 0: Connecting to the 3D Printer

Turn on the 3D printer and then connect your computer to the 3D printer using a mini USB or a micro USB cable. These cables are not provided in the box with the Ender 3 Pro 3D printer but any cable should work. Once connected, click the "connect to printer" button on the page. You should see a popup from Google Chrome prompting you to select which serial connection to establish.

Step 1: Home and Cool Down

Press the button "cool down" to cool down the printer nozzle and return the nozzle to the start position (also known as homing).

If there is any filament that's stuck on your nozzle, you can press the button "heat nozzle" to heat the nozzle to allow for easier cleaning. It'll take some time for the nozzle to heat up, but you can see on the info screen when it is fully heated.

Step 2: Paper Test

Using a piece of paper, we'll then go through the process of making sure the bed is level across all four corners. Slip the piece of paper under nozzle at the home position and wiggle it around. Twist the knob under the plate to ensure that there is a slight amount of friction between the nozzle and the paper. You should feel some resistance when trying to the move the paper around, but you should not need to exert a lot of force to be able to move the paper (if you do, there's too much friction and you should readjust).

Once you are satisfied with the amount of friction between the nozzle and the bed, press "adjusted" if you needed to adjust the bed or press "accepted" if you didn't need adjust the bed level. As a note, clicking "adjusted" will add another round of testing to the cycle. Then, repeat this process for the remaining corners of the print bed.

Step 3: Test Print

Once you have finished the paper test, press the "run test print" button to run a test. What you are looking for here is a consistent print throughout the entire test and that the nozzle doesn't scratch the bed. If both of those things happen, great! Your bed is now level and you are ready to go print other things. If not, go back to step 2 and readjust the level of the bed where you found issues.
