== About People Finder on Facebook Welcome to people_finder application for Facebook. The purpose of the Facebook People Finder is to help locate friends and family (we call them survivors because we are hopeful they are) who are lost during disasters. This application was first created for the Haiti Quake of Jan 12, 2010 and refactored/generalized and open-sourced to be released for the great quake of March 11, 2011 in the north of Japan. With Facebook People Finder, you can keep track of the status of friends and family as well as update and share information with Facebook friends. The main goal is to create a socially updated database of these “survivors” that is as accurate as possible, considering the current limited means of communications with disaster areas. See LICENSE file or here: http://goo.gl/s9uhf == Copyright (C) 2011 - IBM Corporation == Internationalization (i18n) and Localization (l10n) One of the key places where anyone can contribute on this app right now is helping in the internationalization and localization for the views. The code is not currently setup for i18n or l10n since only English translation exist. However, this can be done easily once we have a new translated set of views. So how does one create new views in a different language? Well, glad you asked, this is fairly easy. All views can be accessed here: https://github.com/maximilien/people_finder/tree/master/app/views Most of the files are of the following pattern: <some_controller>/<some_view_name>.html.erb and are of course in English. These files are view templates, so they include both English text and HTML and Ruby. Any Ruby code is within <% %> A French translation would essentially be a new file that keeps all <% %> intact, all English text translated to French, and adjust the HTML (where needed) to match the fact that some text might need more or less space in French than in English---so adjusted formatting. Also the name would be: <some_controller>/<some_view_name>.fr.html.erb So for Japanese it would follow same idea but: <some_controller>/<some_view_name>.ja.html.erb --- the fr and ja shortcut are well known i18n shortcuts for languages, e.g.,English is en and Spanish is es. Since we early in the i18n process, I would not worry about l10n for now (that is, for instance dealing with different variants of one language, e.g., Canadian French vs. Parisian French etc). These files once ready can be committed to GitHub, the process is a pull request: http://help.github.com/pull-requests/ Once we get pull requests we can then enable i18n on the Rails app, perform some local testing, and enable the new views for deployed versions of the app---where appropriate. == Getting Started - Developer Follow this section to get started as a developer for People Finder on Facebook. That is, getting the app up an running in development mode so you can start making changes (add new contributions or fix bugs). A different Getting Started section will address deploying and maintaining an instance of the app. So, in four sub sections, this is how to get People Finder for Facebook running in development mode on your machine. 1. Development Environment Pre-requisites ----------------------------------------- The people_finder Facebook application is written in Ruby on Rails (http://www.rubyonrails.org) and uses Facebooker (http://facebooker.rubyforge.org) as its Facebook API Ruby wrapper. As such, you need to have a RoR 2.3.2 environment setup. This includes the following components as a minimum---listed versions are the one last tested. Newer versions might work but would need testing and potential changes to address deprecation or version-related bugs. a. Ruby (1.8.7) b. gem (1.5.2) c. rake (0.8.7) c. The following gems: acts_as_solr (1.3.3) cgi_multipart_eof_fix (2.5.0) daemons (1.1.0) fastthread (1.0.7) ferret (0.11.6) gem_plugin (0.2.3) icalendar (1.1.5) mongrel (1.1.5) mongrel_cluster (1.0.5) mysql (2.8.1) rake (0.8.7) d. RoR-compatible relational database. The latest production environment used MySQL 5.4.1 on RedHat Linux Setting up the database is highly dependent on the type of database you choose. MySQL is generally straightforward on most OSes. See this download page for MySQL on your OS: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ Setting up Ruby, gem, rake, associated gems, and database depends on development OS. Generally the gems can be installed using $gem install <gem_name-version> but gem requires Ruby and rake. The database gem, e.g., mysql, requires native development environment as well as the database to be already setup. If you are new to RoR development, the best way to get started is to google the following: "Setting up Ruby on Rails on <MyOS>" where <MyOS> is your OS, e.g., Windows, Linux, MacOS, and follow the latest blog posts on the subject. 2. Facebook Development Setup ----------------------------- As a Facebook developer you need to have a Facebook account (http://www.facebook.com) and add the Facebook Developer application to your account, go here: http://www.facebook.com/developers. The easiest way to get started is to set up a new app on the Facebook Developers pages for this application. You click on "Set Up New App" give it a name, e.g., people_finder_<your_short_name> or something similar. Setting up an app on Facebook essentially lets Facebook know about your app (on your server) and gives you some unique tokens that your app can use to communicate with Facebook. These tokens are exchanged between Facebook and your app (and vice-versa). There are also various other settings for help pages, terms of services, and mobile enablement. <<<<<<< HEAD One of the key settings you want your application to have is that it uses FBML (not iFrame). Also, on the main page, take note of the following information: 1) canvas page name, the section after: http://apps.facebook.com/<canvas_name>, this is typically your app name, 2) application api key, and 3) application secret. This is a URL (reachable by Facebook servers) on the public internet where your application resides and runs.
