What are norms?

Together, we proposed norms and ground rules to guide our interactions, which we collated into the following shared commitments.

Norms for everyone to follow

  • Be respectful and encouraging of each other, including of diverse knowledge, learning styles, experience, background, perspectives and opinions
  • Create an environment that facilitates learning for everyone; for example,
    • Nothing is “obvious”; all questions are welcome
    • Arrive ready to focus and engage
    • Share the learning space; step up and step back

Additional norms for the STAMPS instructional team

  • Demonstrate humility and respect for learners, for example,
    • by checking in with the room, and adjusting speed and goals for the sessions
    • by being available and approachable, and also giving people space to work through their own challenges
    • by elevating and supporting, and avoiding diminishing/dismissing ("it's easy", "just do this")
    • by offering multiple pathways to learning
