Integrating with SAF Document Provider

I've got a document provider that I'd like to integrate with Player. It supports SAF but I'm having difficulty understanding how to use Player's UI.

If I click on the little folder icon on the bottom screen (the left most icon), it will bring up the System UI (DocumentsUI picker) but if I then click on the three bars icon to the left of Movies, it does not show any of my document providers.

If instead,I do a long click on the little foler icon it does bring up a documentsui picker that does have document providers under the three bars icon on the top left of the window. I can navigate around my provider, and can see mp4 and mov files, but I can't select them.

What am I missing?

BTW, I'm the developer of the Android "SpiritCloud" app. It not only is an SMB provider, it also is an SMB server, and supports lots of other features. I'm not trying to give it a plug. I truly would like to integrate Player with it.
