Do you have a theory as to why there are no colons |
@nojb : no. But since the opam packages don't pass paths to dune, I expect that this are issues with normalising CWD. Can someone point me to the path normalisation code in dune, so that I can review it? I might also search for it, but it is hard to tell if I get all of it. |
The path normalization code is in By the way, we very rarely normalize paths which is why I am a bit surprised this has happened. My original suspicion was if something changed in coqdep and it was feeding dune nonsense paths. But I have yet to find evidence for that. Edit: FTR, what I wrote above is incorrect. There is no path normalization code in Dune because we don't do it. The most we have with path manipulation is reaching one directory from another which isn't used in this case. Generally, we are very careful with our path operations to make sure they are correct on all platforms and efficient. |
Here is what coqdep in Coq 8.18 is outputting:
Newer versions of Dune started calling coqdep with -boot by default and passing the However now that we ask for an external dependency, This also appears to be an issue on 8.17 and 8.16. It therefore appears that coqdep never worked correctly when referencing external dependencies on cygwin which is somewhat surprising. I'm not particularly happy disabling -boot for cygwin users as this would lead to incorrect setups. Since this is only a Coq platform thing, would it be possible to patch the bug in coqdep yourselves so that it reports the correct path? |
@Alizter : many thanks for the root cause analysis! So it is apparently and issue in coqdep and not in dune. Since it is apparently not an issue in dune, I am closing this. |
@nojb: I reopen this since an analysis showed that the produced path syntax So the root cause of the issue appears to be that dune does not properly unescape makefile syntax in dependency files. |
I am currently preparing a patch that you can use for Coq Platform. The relevant code is: dune/src/dune_rules/coq/coq_rules.ml Lines 438 to 456 in 7debf4e
I am already not so happy that we have to do any parsing of coqdep output as this is very fragile, but now we have to also take into account the escaping. It would be great if coqdep had a machine readable output like canonical S-expressions so that we didn't have to do this. Alternatively, if we vendored some of the In any case, adding the extra parsing steps here and in the platform seems the best and most practical way forward. |
Indeed it would be an option to have an alternate output format for coqdep. What I wouldn't appreciate though is if we would introduce simplified variants of make file syntax in order to simplify the communication between coqdep and dune. We should always use standard formats - S expressions would be a good choice IMHO. I don't care which format we use, but let's stick to whatever standard we use. |
Indeed the way @Alizter thank you very much, your patch is IMO the right thing to do. |
Where can one find a specification of the format? I couldn't see anything related in the manual of GNU Make. |
Indeed, as far as I can tell, the manual only says that # and a line trailing backslash can be escaped with a backslash. It is fairly obvious that a colon must be escaped if it appears in a target path - if make requires to escape it if it appears in a dependency I haven't tried. The comment explaining escaping in coqdep was written by @ejgallego. Emilio: do you have a reference or evidence? |
@MSoegtropIMC I'm unsure if that's what you are asking for, but the escape code for Dune should be in sync with that code and unescape the paths properly. |
@ejgallego : the question was if you have some references for the quoting rules in coqdep. There are some comments in the coqdep sources - from GIT history I guess by you - so I guess you have read about this somewhere. I couldn't fund much about this in the gnu make reference manual. Afaikt it only explains the escaping of \ and #. |
The quoting rules were mostly added in Coq's commits: and to the best of my knowlegde, they remain unchanged. |
CHANGES: - Do not ignore `(formatting ..)` settings in context or workspace files (ocaml/dune#8447, @rgrinberg) - Add command `dune cache clear` to completely delete all traces of the Dune cache. (ocaml/dune#8975, @nojb) - Fixed a bug where Dune was incorrectly parsing the output of coqdep when it was escaped, as is the case on Windows. (ocaml/dune#9231, fixes ocaml/dune#9218, @Alizter) - Copying mode for sandboxes will now follow symbolic links (ocaml/dune#9282, @rgrinberg) - Forbid the empty `(binaries ..)` field in the `env` stanza in the workspace file unless language version is at least 3.2. - [coq] Fix bug in computation of flags when composed with boot theories. (ocaml/dune#9347, fixes ocaml/dune#7909, @ejgallego) - Fixed a bug where the `(select)` field of the `(libraries)` field of the `(test)` stanza wasn't working properly. (ocaml/dune#9387, fixes ocaml/dune#9365, @Alizter) - Allow to disable Coq 0.8 deprecation warning (ocaml/dune#9439, @ejgallego) - Fix handling of the `PATH` argument to `dune init proj NAME PATH`. An intermediate directory called `NAME` is no longer created if `PATH` is supplied, so `dune init proj my_project .` will now initialize a project in the current working directory. (ocaml/dune#9447, fixes ocaml/dune#9209, @shonfeder) - Allow `OCAMLFIND_TOOLCHAIN` to be set per context in the workspace file through the `env` stanza. (ocaml/dune#9449, @rgrinberg) - Experimental doc rules: Correctly handle the case when a package depends upon its own sublibraries (ocaml/dune#9461, fixes ocaml/dune#9456, @jonludlam) - Resolve various public binaries to their build location, rather than to where they're copied in the `_build/install` directory (ocaml/dune#9496, fixes ocaml/dune#7908, @rgrinberg). - Menhir: generate `.conflicts` file by default. Add new field to the `(menhir)` stanza to control the generation of this file: `(explain <blang expression>)`. Introduce `(menhir (flags ...) (explain ...))` field in the `(env)` stanza, delete `(menhir_flags)` field. All changes are guarded under a new version of the Menhir extension, 3.0. (ocaml/dune#9512, @nojb) - Correctly ignore warning flags in vendored projects (ocaml/dune#9515, @rgrinberg) - Directory targets can now be caches. (ocaml/dune#9535, @rleshchinskiy) - Remove warning 30 from default set for projects where dune lang is at least 3.13 (ocaml/dune#9568, @gasche) - It is now possible to use special forms such as `(:include)` and variables `%{read-lines:}` in `(modules)` and similar fields. Note that the dependencies introduced in this way (ie the files being read) must live in a different directory than the stanza making use of them. (ocaml/dune#9578, @nojb) - Use watch exclusions in watch mode on MacOS (ocaml/dune#9643, fixes ocaml/dune#9517, @PoorlyDefinedBehaviour) - Fix merlin configuration for `(include_subdirs qualified)` modules (ocaml/dune#9659, fixes ocaml/dune#8297, @rgrinberg) - Fix handling of `enabled_if` in binary install stanzas. Previously, we'd ignore the result of `enabled_if` when evaluating `%{bin:..}` (ocaml/dune#9707, @rgrinberg) - Add `coqdoc_flags` field to `coq` field of `env` stanza allowing the setting of workspace-wide defaults for `coqdoc_flags`. (ocaml/dune#9280, fixes ocaml/dune#9139, @Alizter) - ctypes: fix an error where `(ctypes)` with no `(function_description)` would cause an error trying refer to a nonexistent `_stubs.a` dependency (ocaml/dune#9302, fix ocaml/dune#9300, @emillon)

Expected Behavior
dune produces correct paths in Windows cygwin MinGW cross environments
Actual Behavior
Path normalization in dune produces invalid paths. The likely cause is that paths starting with C:/ are not recognized as absolute paths. Please note that Windows file APIs do accept / as path separator (since pretty much ever) without any pre processing (say by MinGW C library). So dune should support this as well.
Example paths produced in a Coq Platform 2023.11 / 8.18 build are:
