podcatchd - Download enclosures from one or more RSS feeds
podcatchd config
podcatchd is a crude, but effective and surpassingly simple podcatcher; that is, a utility to download the enclosures in an RSS feed. Unlike some other non-GUI podcatchers, podcatchd is not a one-shot program, which you would need to run in a cron(8) job or something similar in order to truly follow a podcast, but a long-running process which is meant to be run from a tmux session, or as a background daemon.
The first argument must be the location of podcatchd's configuration file, which simply lists the name and URL of each podcast on separate lines, like so:
name: foo
url: http://example.com/foo.rss
name: bar
url: http://example.com/bar.rss
The order of the name: and url: fields is insignificant, and blank lines are ignored.
LOG_DEST
When set to stdout, podcatchd will send log messages to its standard output; when set to logger, logs will be sent to syslog via logger(1).
PODCAST_DIR
Directory to place new podcasts under, defaults to the current directory. Podcast files will be placed in subdirectories of PODCAST_DIR according to their names in the configuration file.
PODCATCHD_PATH
Path where podcatchd is installed, defaults to the current directory. It is suggested that this default be changed for system-wide installations.
SH
Path to the shell podcatchd should use; should have good POSIX trap support. Debian's dash(1) is known to be unsuitable; bash(1) and OpenBSD's ksh(1) work.
Very little is enforced about the configuration file's syntax; malformed configuration files may yield surprising (though well-defined) behavior.
Any ongoing podcast downloads will continue even after the main process dies, and shells such as dash(1) which implement 'trap EXIT' incorrectly may prevent any cleanup from happening at all.
