8% of the male population is (to a certain measure) color-blind. Red is weak color for them.
I'm one of those people - using iD is plainly impossible: I cannot see what is selected or even if something is selected.
There is an easy solution: take care take something that has to be distinguished not only has a different colour, but also a different luminance!

Accessibility is a basic requirement for software. iD needs improvement in this aspect. Who should I turn to??

It would be great if you could point out specific improvements to be made here - for most elements in iD, we've tried to make the distinction between elements in both form and color, or kept color out of the equation entirely (as in map icons). One area that could use improvement, though, is road and area line colors. Any others that come to mind?

Thanks for your quick response, I though I was specific. I try again: using openstreetmaps, in edit mode, I select an object (street or surface). I cannot see what I selected, or if I did pick anything - the selected object is probably dark red or something (when I try hard I do some change indeed).
Green, brown or red objects with the same luminance are indistinguishable (get much better with high luminance though). Purple and blue or bright green and yellow: same thing.
Maybe I am on the wrong forum here, I posted this issue initially on the openstreets forum ...

For reference, a typical map view via deuteranopia:

The selection halo is visible, but of course isn't as prominent since it doesn't tend to have color contrast against other objects:
