Utils Character Creation
DO NOT EDIT THIS CHARACTER. YOU WILL BREAK EVERYTHING.
How To Set Up A Character Before following this guide you must understand how to create a character in D&D and the basics of using Roll20! I would very strongly prefer that you attempt to create a character on your own using the Shaped Sheet before asking me for help with technical details. I'm 100% happy to help you, but it is much faster and easier to learn and remember things when you discover them on your own than when someone just tells you what to do. I've tried really hard to give you a good start with this guide, however. :) (Note that I will totally help you make a character if you're new!!) 0. Read the Intro and House Rules. You can also check out Resources & Tools for things you might find useful during this process.
- Decide on the minimums. Before you ever touch Roll20, you need to decide on a race, class, and background. If you're starting at higher levels, you need to also decide on an archetype. You should also have a basic character concept or backstory before you go any further, because that will influence your decisions.
- Make a character sheet. You should have received a character sheet in your journal when you first logged into this campaign. If not, Click here to create a new character sheet. This will create a character blank character in your journal.
- Name your character. If you need name ideas, try some name generators (I suggested one in Resources & Tools) After you have chosen a name, open your character sheet, click Edit in the upper right-hand corner, and then change your character's name.
- Roll stats. Click here to roll your stats.
- Create your character. Explaining exactly how to make a character with the shaped sheet, with every feature and the location of every item, is beyond the scope of this guide -- especially because the shaped sheet often has small layout changes in updates, and is updated often. This video is the most recent guide I've been able to find, though unfortunately the sheet has changed a lot since the video was created. However, since the shaped sheet is based on the default D&D character sheet, a basic understanding of the paper sheet should get you pretty far. The most important thing to remember about the shaped character sheet is that you have to click the pencil icon to edit basically anything. When the pencil icon is yellow, you are in editing mode. When it is grey, you are in viewing mode.
The most important differences of note from the paper sheet or OGL character sheet (as of version 14.0.0) are: (most important are bold) • You should input your class first, because all class features will be filled in for you. You'll have to manually input everything from your archetype, race, and background however. Unless you have an entirely custom class, which will require manual input. • There are separate sections for racial traits, class features, feats, and other traits, instead of the big "features" section. • Every named thing is clickable and will display something to the chat when clicked if it turns blue when you hover your mouse over it. • Every section can be condensed with the condense button in the upper right-hand corner. If it's green, it's condensed. If it's grey, it's not. • Attacks are called "Offense" for no good reason at all. • The Utility section allows you to track miscellaneous things like potions, magic items with uses, etc. • The sheet will track ammo automatically if you fill out the "uses" part next to a ranged weapon attack (make sure to set it to 1 per use.) You will want to make a new attack for each ammo type if you use one weapon and multiple types of ammo. • Most fields give you extra options. Those do the following: • Emote: whatever you put here will show up as an emote in the attack or spell card, just like an emote from the chat. For example, "dances with her swords!" with output as "(Character Name) dances with her swords!" • Freetext: is for whatever text or description you want to add, as well as extra inline rolls and macros. • Freeform: is space for attaching more chat commands, API calls, or custom sections in the style of the 5e-shaped roll template, which you can learn more about in the documentation if you are interested. It's basically extra code that you add. • The sheet will automatically track long and short rests. It will refresh your hit points and hit dice, and it will replenish every class feature that is replenished on a rest if they are each set up accordingly. • The sheet keeps track of death saves when you fail or succeed. • This isn't a difference but drag and drop still works for spells and items. You must make a new space for it an drag it to that space. • There are buttons above the spells section to help you filter your spells. If this is causing you trouble you should click "filters"' to turn the button grey and therefore off. • Spells can make special effects! Ooh! Pretty! 6. Choose your default token. If you have a particular image in mind, all you need to do is edit it using Token Stamp. You can give your token any colors you want, but make sure you choose a border shape that is mostly circular. After you're done, download your image and email it to me, or upload it to imgur and DM me the link. Rollable tokens. If you want to have multiple "sides" to your token, like one for rage and one for normal for example, just token-stamp them all and send them to me.
If you don't know what token image you want, then you can choose from the token images I've made available to you. You can browse the following Imgur albums to see what your choices are. When you've chosen an image, send me the image itself or the link to it and I'll make it your token. Token Set 1 Token Set 2 Token Set 3 Token Set 4 Token Set 5 Token Set 6 Token Set 7 Token Set 8
If you forgot to choose a token and you're in a hurry because we're about to play, Go to the Macro Tab (bullet points icon) at the top of the chat, and then scroll down to the rollable table called "Default-Tokens", and click Token. A token will appear on the map. Drag it to the "Characters" area, then right click on the token, then select Multi-Sided > Choose a Side and use the slider (or arrow keys once you have clicked the slider) to choose the token image. Double-click the token and change it's name to your character's name with the word UNATTACHED next to it, and I will attach it to your character sheet ASAP.
- Finish Up Drag your finished character onto the "Characters" space on the main page to create a token.
Macros are a great way to speed up game play, so I've already provided many for you and all you need to do is play around with them to familiarize yourself. Special FX are a fun and easy way to add pizzazz to your spells and attacks. You can even very easily make particle effects trigger automatically when you cast a spell!
