Measure consensus Nakamoto coefficient #2588

I5-enhancement An additional feature request. I10-unconfirmed Issue might be valid, but it's not yet known.

Is there an existing issue?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Experiencing problems? Have you tried our Stack Exchange first?

  • This is not a support question.

Motivation

Measure the decentralization of the project via Nakamoto coefficient, which is the measure of the smallest number of independent entities that can act collectively to block the consensus of a blockchain.

Request

An independent open source third party project, nakaflow, compares all major blockchains in terms of Nakamoto coefficient. It would be very interesting to add Polkadot.

Solution

Add it to nakaflow. I do not have sufficient expertise to do it.

Are you willing to help with this request?

Maybe (please elaborate above)

@shawntabrizi could you maybe do this?

Hi @alfredonodo are you a part of the nakaflow team? I don't see your name on the contributors list of the linked repo.

I am happy to help, I could even write some javascript code for you to get the data you want, but can you be more specific about what data you need specifically?

For example, if i gave you a list of all the validator accounts, and how much stake is backing them in a staking session, is that what you are looking for?

Hi,
I am not part of the team, I am just a technology enthusiast and a student of blockchain.
The aim of the project is to measure the decentralisation of consensus, so you need to have the list of validators sorted by their stakes and take the first ones who are able to control consensus about 33.3% of the stakes for Nominated PoS (by old calculations Polkadot was one of the most decentralised blockchains).
The project uses the Go language and this is a limitation of mine. However, you can take inspiration from other projects, the last one that was added was this one. I found this Polkadot API, but I don't know if there is anything better.
Thank you

The easy way is just read data from Subscan or Subsquid or some polkadot staking API
