DINish v4.004: Add Black, fix production issues

I would like to apologize for releasing v4.003 with broken zips. The only manual task in preparing a release is uploading the zips from the build machine and I actually uploaded a broken work-in-progress build... To cut down on confusion, I released v4.004 early.

DINish v4.004 adds a Black weight (to the static instances only for now).

The online font specimen for DINish has been converted to use the variable font. The preview text is editable, so any variation you can dream of can now be previewed online!

DINish v4 comes with four extra weights (Light, Medium, SemiBold and Heavy). As a bonus, it comes with a variable font, allowing a designer to use infinite variations of weight from 300 to 800, width from Condensed to Expanded, and Italic angle from 0 to 12Β°.

Few desktop applications fully support variable fonts as of this writing, so you may wish to not install the last file in the zip, named DINish[slnt, wdth, wght].otf (or .ttf), to avoid confusion.

DINish v4.003: Rebuild variable font

DINish v4.002 is a minor update to make capital C and S consistent across the family to close #12.

DINish v4.003 is a rebuild of the variable font only, to remove "-Regular" from its internal name. This rebuild is only important for tools that change its behavior based on the internal name of a font, such as Specimen Builder. We happen to use Specimen Builder for our font specimen, so we noticed. :-) The specimen has been converted to use the variable font. The preview text is editable, so all variations can now be previewed online.

Update: All zips been replaced with fixed versions, due to a production issue. I will release a freshly rebuilt v4.004 as soon as I figure out what went wrong in the first place.

DINishPreview v3.908 Pre-release
Pre-release

DINishPreview v3.908 hopefully addresses all reported shortcomings of the earlier previews. A Slant axis was added, which seems to produce comparable glyphs to the existing Italic static fonts. Please keep reporting any issues you spot with the preview!

As discussed in the release plans #10, here's a preview of the result of the new build process, and a massive normalisation and cleanup of almost all glyphs in support of an eventual release including a fully functional Variable Font. This preview release is intended for testing and is therefore called DINishPreview. If you think it's the best thing since sliced bread, feel free to use it for whatever you fancy, but be aware a lot has changed under the hood and issues may be lurking.

This release includes all widths, i.e. Condensed, Mittelschrift and Expanded, with all weights from 300 to 800 as separate instances. Using the instances is recommended for word processing and the many other tools that do not (or not fully) support variable fonts. There is also a variable font (in TrueType and OpenType formats), that can generate all widths between 0.75 and 1.25, and all weights between 300 and 800. I tried it in the TBDR font animator, as well as on https://www.vartype.com/, and it seems to work as advertised, but YMMV. Some more testing has been done with the Wakamai Fondue.

Please report any issues to the Discussions section. Or success stories, if it's fit enough for your purpose!

Please note that this pre-release was not built using source controlled tools, and unlike normal releases, the attached files may be updated or even removed entirely. This preview will be pulled once the final version lands.

The next stage is reworking the build process. So unless someone uncovers a showstopper, this is likely to become DINish v4. Fontbakery is happy with the VF.

DINishPreview v3.905 Pre-release
Pre-release

DINishPreview v3.905 fixes the issues with side bearings and contour order that kenmcd identified in issue #11, and this time hopefully completely. The causes of the issues were varied, and mostly fallout of fixes for earlier issues that caused waterbed effect.

DINishPreview v3.902 and v3.903 were never released as testing revealed the waterbed effect in action once again.

DINishPreview v3.901 add support for Expanded to both the variable font and the generated instances, compared to v3.900. Some minor bugs in the variable fonts were resolved, such as the lower case "i" losing its dot in intermediate weights. The below writeup was updated to reflect the addition of Expanded.

Italic has received short shrift, which will be addressed in the final release.

The Expanded fonts in this release are extremely limited, they will receive TLC before the final release. Also, Italic has received short shrift, which will also be addressed in the final release.

DINish v3.008: Add BoldItalic variants

18 Jul 23:39
Compare

DINish v3.008 adds BoldItalic variants for all three widths. This makes the family RIBBI complete, and closes #6.

This release also adds the SS02 stylistic alternate, which includes a single storey "a" for people who consider a two storey "a" to be too old fashioned (or just think it looks friendlier).

Under the hood, some cleanup happened, and two missing glyphs for Mongolian were added.
