shift+option modifier key on volume increment/decrement keys broken #4062
Comments
More info: I also downloaded and applied the 'Fine Volume Control' rule and it didn't work--it did nothing. So the key modifiers not working problem might be happening there too. To try to eliminate the possibility that the reported problem might be a side-effect of the rule, I uninstalled and reinstalled the application without reinstalling the rule and the problem persisted. |
I had a chance to install both FastScripts and Keyboard Maestro recently and neither has this problem. Perhaps they figured a way around it?

I also installed BetterTouchTool and it does not have this problem either.

On my end, shift+option+f11 and shift+option+f12 are working for adjusting the volume in 1/4 increments. |
OK. I just reinstalled karabiner-elements and have replicated the problem. I tried to do some more investigation.
When I initially reported this issue, I had two keyboards connected to the system.
A Keychron V3 USB keyboard, which is supposed to be Mac compatible and has a Mac layout.
A Rii mini i8+ wireless keyboard, which has an extended Windows style layout and uses a special USB dongle. This is the keyboard I was mostly using at the time.
On a hunch, I added another keyboard to the mix:
A Keychron C1 USB keyboard, which is supposed to be Mac compatible and has a Mac layout.
Fine volume control works on the C1 even with karabiner-elements running. Yay.
Fine volume control does not work on the Rii mini with karabiner-elements running. If I quit karabiner-elements via the UI then fine volume control will work on the Rii mini.
I need to completely uninstall karabiner-elements to restore fine volume control functionality to the V3 keyboard; simply quitting karabiner-elements via the UI is insufficient. With karabiner-elements uninstalled, all three keyboards have fine volume control working.
I have no idea what it is about the C1 that made it work fine under karabiner-elements.
I tried just having the V3 keyboard connected with the others disconnected, but had the same issues with it.
All three keyboards have fine volume control working with BetterTouchTool running. No issues with that software.
I think I had fine volume control working on all three keyboards with karabiner-elements running at one time, but only temporarily. It had something to do with reinstalling karabiner-elements and setting up the keyboard type for the “virtual keyboard.” But this didn’t survive a re-boot and didn’t persist. But I’m done with this for now; karabiner-elements is uninstalled and I’m just not motivated to try to replicate that.

Could it be that some rule is affecting this behavior? Have you tried testing with a new profile to see if the result changes?

Thank you for confirming. I see, the current Fine Volume Control configuration provided by the community only works with the actual F11 and F12 inputs, so it does not work with the volume control buttons. I suspect that the V3 and Rii mini are sending events as volume control buttons. I'll make sure to improve the Fine Volume Control configuration later to support both types. |
shift+option modifier key on volume increment/decrement keys (fine volume increment) is broken and this is a fresh install of the program. I don't know, but modifier keys on media keys might be broken in general, but that's speculation.
I just don't have the patience to try to investigate this further. This program is a no-go for me.
