Confirmed by the .ad registry:

Hi William.

We can confirm that the .ad TLD does no currently operate any functional public SLD. .nom.ad existed, in theory, some time ago, but is no longer offered and there is no currently existing domain under tht SLD nor any other. Only domains under the TLD .ad do exist and are available for registration.

I think we should be more thorough than quoting an email. The #2264 #2266 examples look more reasonable to me.

It would indeed be nice if we could get some more robust confirmation. @wdhdev @groundcat maybe you can ask the registrars to publish a list of subdomains they support on their site?

Merging this anyway because of I have a certain amount of trust that @wdhdev isn't making this up and I don't find it plausible that somebody else would have malicious replied to his mail.

Of course, Strange Australians on Github distributing emails is no basis for a system of government.
