Comments related to the Global Invasive Species Information Network (GISIN)

GISIN has done some considerable work proposing data standards related to alien species and invasions.

The addition of a new controlled vocabulary to establishmentMeans is similar to the GISIN concepts of "mode" and "mechanism". However, there are no vocabularies associated with these. This does suggest that an alternative to a hierarchical vocabulary for establishmentMeans is to split the concept into two fields "mode" and "mechanism".

The term occurenceStatus seems to be equivalent to the GISIN concept of "persistence" and does not seem incompatible with it.

The addition of a new term origin seems to be the same as the GISIN concept for "origin".

The terms GISIN terms "origin" and "persistence" are mentioned in GBIF Darwin Core extensions for SpeciesStatus http://tools.gbif.org/dwca-validator/extension.do?id=http://www.gisin.org/IASProfile/SpeciesStatus. This documentation may need to be reconciled if these proposed changes are made.
