This reverts commit 24b321e.

@rysurd I'm going to revert this for now as we need more time to figure out how to handle the corner cases.
We'll see if we can come up with a safe approach and maybe backport it to 3.7 - but I'm not promising anything, it might end up being 3.9 only if we think it's too risky.
