UART at initialisation send unexpected signalling on TX line #148
Comments
There is a patch to fix this: but it got reverted as it breaks the uart console. |
Can someone who can see this issue and can rebuild the kernel try this patch: |
I've been running with the patch, and I've noticed the checkerboard character no longer appears just before the login prompt. No ill effects so far. |
I guess the other thing to check would be disabling the serial-console using raspi-config, and then checking that no dummy character gets transmitted during the bootup sequence (which I recall seeing people on the forum complaining about ages ago). |

Patch has been merged and is in latest rpi-update firmware. |
sorry - can't ... already changed platform ... anyone else may easily test even with cheapest logic analyzers ... |
You don't need a logic analyzer or an oscilloscope if you set the baudrate high enough. Set the baudrate to 500000 and the dummy character will show up on any serial monitor program (e.g. jpnevulator on linux). In my experience, if the baudrate is too low (9600) the spike of the dummy byte will show on the oscilloscope, but it's so narrow that the UART driver on the RX doesn't see it. |
As @pelwell says, before this patch you see a spurious character before login prompt, after the patch it's gone, so there is clearly something fixed. |
NewWorld : it's MAY broke communication with hardware that STRONGLY act on protocol specifications ... for example TRY to flash some hardware from raspberry pi, when device wait EXACT sequence for service mode on powering up, but will got some trash at beginning / for example stm32 development boards in uart boot mode / ... not showed/translated symbol is only show that signal is not recognized in current configuration (baudrate/parity/...) - but persistence of unexpected spikes that can broke communication in other configurations is unknown ... - And that may be detected only with specialized hardware. "uart console" mode also needed for communication - so patch 4a0a556 suggested on Oct 29, 2012 was not appropriate solution for me ... |
Just to keep all the dots joined up... looks like this issue received an additional tweak due to #854 |
I'll close this as we believe issue is fixed. Feel free to reopen if there are further issues. |
My console no longer displays corrupted characters on boot, instead I now get extra ones for free.
This is reliable across reboots. |
I hadn't noticed, but it looks like I do too:

Commit 66b3923 ("arm64: hugetlb: add support for PTE contiguous bit") introduced support for huge pages using the contiguous bit in the PTE as opposed to block mappings, which may be slightly unwieldy (512M) in 64k page configurations. Unfortunately, this support has resulted in some late regressions when running the libhugetlbfs test suite with 64k pages and CONFIG_DEBUG_VM as a result of a BUG: | readback (2M: 64): ------------[ cut here ]------------ | kernel BUG at fs/hugetlbfs/inode.c:446! | Internal error: Oops - BUG: 0 [raspberrypi#1] SMP | Modules linked in: | CPU: 7 PID: 1448 Comm: readback Not tainted 4.5.0-rc7 raspberrypi#148 | Hardware name: linux,dummy-virt (DT) | task: fffffe0040964b00 ti: fffffe00c2668000 task.ti: fffffe00c2668000 | PC is at remove_inode_hugepages+0x44c/0x480 | LR is at remove_inode_hugepages+0x264/0x480 Rather than revert the entire patch, simply avoid advertising the contiguous huge page sizes for now while people are actively working on a fix. When a cookie is allocated that causes fscache_object structs to be allocated, those objects are initialised with the cookie pointer, but aren't blessed with a ref on that cookie unless the attachment is successfully completed in fscache_attach_object(). If attachment fails because the parent object was dying or there was a collision, fscache_attach_object() returns without incrementing the cookie counter - but upon failure of this function, the object is released which then puts the cookie, whether or not a ref was taken on the cookie. Fix this by taking a ref on the cookie when it is assigned in fscache_object_init(), even when we're creating a root object. Analysis from Kiran Kumar: This bug has been seen in 4.4.0-124-generic #148-Ubuntu kernel BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1776277 fscache cookie ref count updated incorrectly during fscache object allocation resulting in following Oops. kernel BUG at /build/linux-Y09MKI/linux-4.4.0/fs/fscache/internal.h:321! kernel BUG at /build/linux-Y09MKI/linux-4.4.0/fs/fscache/cookie.c:639! [Cause] Two threads are trying to do operate on a cookie and two objects. (1) One thread tries to unmount the filesystem and in process goes over a huge list of objects marking them dead and deleting the objects. cookie->usage is also decremented in following path: nfs_fscache_release_super_cookie -> __fscache_relinquish_cookie ->__fscache_cookie_put ->BUG_ON(atomic_read(&cookie->usage) <= 0); (2) A second thread tries to lookup an object for reading data in following path: fscache_alloc_object 1) cachefiles_alloc_object -> fscache_object_init -> assign cookie, but usage not bumped. 2) fscache_attach_object -> fails in cant_attach_object because the cookie's backing object or cookie's->parent object are going away 3) fscache_put_object -> cachefiles_put_object ->fscache_object_destroy ->fscache_cookie_put ->BUG_ON(atomic_read(&cookie->usage) <= 0); [NOTE from dhowells] It's unclear as to the circumstances in which (2) can take place, given that thread (1) is in nfs_kill_super(), however a conflicting NFS mount with slightly different parameters that creates a different superblock would do it. A backtrace from Kiran seems to show that this is a possibility: kernel BUG at/build/linux-Y09MKI/linux-4.4.0/fs/fscache/cookie.c:639! ... There is possible circular locking dependency detected on event_mutex (see below logs). This is due to set fail safe mode is done at dp_panel_read_sink_caps() within event_mutex scope.
