Implementing User Confirmation for Download/Install

Hello,

Recently, hawkbit released a new version 0.3.0M8 https://github.com/eclipse/hawkbit/releases/tag/0.3.0M8 which included support for "Request confirmation for actions before proceeding with download/install process." option. As ststed in the release notes "The new feature facilitates the implementation of user consent requirements (e.g. as mandated by the European Tangible Goods Directive) by enhancing the action state machine with a new state WAITING_FOR_CONFIRMATION". It can be activated/set in hawkBit UI under System Config. Then the target needs to either set confirmed or denied to make an action available for download confirm-action. "The action will be transferred into the RUNNING state in case the device is confirming it. Afterwards it will be exposed by the deploymentBase."

I believe these operations are not currently part of rauc-hawkbit-updater.
Is there any plan to support these operations in the next release of the client?

Hi, you're right, there is no support for hawkBit's new "confirmation" concept in rauc-hawkbit-updater, yet. rauc-hawkbit-updater would need to implement support for the new API end point /{tenant}/controller/v1/{controllerid}/confirmationBase and everything below that path (see DDI API docs).

We don't have any plans to implement this at the moment. We'd be happy to take a PR implementing this. If you need this in a commercial context, you could also contact Pengutronix (my employer) and let us implement this in rauc-hawkbit-updater.

I'd like to pick up the implementation of this feature and write down some design notes I have in mind. Please let me know if I should publish them elsewhere.

• My general understanding of ConfirmationBase API is that it's similar to DeploymentBase. The only difference would be to get a user issued confirmation before proceeding with deployment action. Basically, during service life time it always uses one or the other, there's no need to switch between them at run-time. Therefore I suggest to add an option in the config.conf file to predefine which one is used, something like require_confirmaiton = true/false.
• In order to communicate with a user defined application a new interface would be required. Since DBus is already in place for IPC, the suggestion would be to keep using it for this interface:

It mirrors the information Hawkbit expects as feedback a bit. For example, confirmation is a string, which is not necessary the best choice.

• The response does not have to come immediately, therefore it's in a form of a signal. I actually don't know if Hawkbit itself would be happy with that :)

D-bus for communication and integer or boolean type for confirmation do sound reasonable.

Hi @UVV-gh, I'm trying to put together some software running with your PR, however I'm a bit confused about what exactly should happen. I did set require_confirmation = true in the config file, however after an update download the update was installed immediately, without any wait time for the user approval. I cannot see de.pengutronix.rauc.InstallConfirmation DBUS node either, only de.pengutronix.rauc. Is there some additional config necessary or should it work out of the box? I'm working with yocto and it does not seem possible to download code from a pull request, so I decided to pull right from your fork.

The other questions is related to how is this confirmation initiated on the HawkBits side? Should it come after a Soft Update? I'm running a hawkbit docker instance - the latest image, which is HawkBit 4.1 or later.

Actually no, it was an error on my side. I'm having more questions though.
What's supposed to happen on the rauc-hawkbit-udpater side when an update is launched as Soft Update from hawkbit, then the update gets confirmed by the install _confirm.py script? Is is supposed to be installed or downloaded?
In my case none of those happened, the last message is INFO: Antion 1 confirmed - this is good, cause install_confirm.py did make the confirmation, however the update install did not happen at all.

After 5 minutes rauc-hawkbit-updater went back to checking if the server has any new software for it, no install of the previous pathc, nothing, sadly. @UVV-gh do you have any idea on what could be going wrong.

The exact same scenario plays out with an update set to be Forced in the HawkBit settings - the confirmation is delivered, however nothing happens after that, take a look:

I'm pretty sure that there's something I'm missing out there, still do not know what - wht is the expected behaviour and if the expected is for the image to be installed immediately after the confirmation, then what could I be doing wrong?

I just expected it to start downloading the software right away after the confirmation and not with so much delay. Is below supposed to happen in a forced mode?

1. Issue forced update from HawkBit
2. Find the update with rauc-hawkbit-udpater and request a user-confirmation
3. Save the confirmation for later, listen for an update again
4. Start updating once an update is found

Correct, that's the current implementation. To be more precise, it's the Hawkbit itself that kept the confirmation status. The actual download is triggered on the next polling interval. I didn't want to break the current encapsulation in the implementation, that's why I kept it this way for now. To launch the download right away after confirmation, I think we need to align with @Bastian-Krause and @ejoerns in order to change some rauc-hawkbit-updater internals. But I suppose that should be a part of a further improvement. Current changeset is not small already.

Good to know that this is how things are supposed to be, I like that things work well and the mechanism seems reliable.
I do have one question / request though.

Is possible to add the description information alongside with the request for the confirmation? There's already the version info, I think that access to the description would be very helpful allowing the user know what exactly is being installed. The description field is present in the HawkBit's software module:
