RK3288 kernel hang on boot #23
Comments
You can test with cpu/gpu devfreq disabled. |
Thanks for your reply, I tried disabling devfreq in the kernel configuration but it didn't solve the problem. |
commit d491221 upstream. WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 2840 at arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c:10966 nested_vmx_vmexit+0xdcd/0xde0 [kvm_intel] CPU: 3 PID: 2840 Comm: qemu-system-x86 Tainted: G OE 4.12.0-rc3+ #23 RIP: 0010:nested_vmx_vmexit+0xdcd/0xde0 [kvm_intel] Call Trace: ? kvm_check_async_pf_completion+0xef/0x120 [kvm] ? rcu_read_lock_sched_held+0x79/0x80 vmx_queue_exception+0x104/0x160 [kvm_intel] ? vmx_queue_exception+0x104/0x160 [kvm_intel] kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl_run+0x1171/0x1ce0 [kvm] ? kvm_arch_vcpu_load+0x47/0x240 [kvm] ? kvm_arch_vcpu_load+0x62/0x240 [kvm] kvm_vcpu_ioctl+0x384/0x7b0 [kvm] ? kvm_vcpu_ioctl+0x384/0x7b0 [kvm] ? __fget+0xf3/0x210 do_vfs_ioctl+0xa4/0x700 ? __fget+0x114/0x210 SyS_ioctl+0x79/0x90 do_syscall_64+0x81/0x220 entry_SYSCALL64_slow_path+0x25/0x25 This is triggered occasionally by running both win7 and win2016 in L2, in addition, EPT is disabled on both L1 and L2. It can't be reproduced easily. Commit 0b6ac34 (KVM: nVMX: Correct handling of exception injection) mentioned that "KVM wants to inject page-faults which it got to the guest. This function assumes it is called with the exit reason in vmcs02 being a #PF exception". Commit e011c66 (KVM: nVMX: Check all exceptions for intercept during delivery to L2) allows to check all exceptions for intercept during delivery to L2. However, there is no guarantee the exit reason is exception currently, when there is an external interrupt occurred on host, maybe a time interrupt for host which should not be injected to guest, and somewhere queues an exception, then the function nested_vmx_check_exception() will be called and the vmexit emulation codes will try to emulate the "Acknowledge interrupt on exit" behavior, the warning is triggered. Reusing the exit reason from the L2->L0 vmexit is wrong in this case, the reason must always be EXCEPTION_NMI when injecting an exception into L1 as a nested vmexit. obsolete issue. |
As Eric Dumazet pointed out this also needs to be fixed in IPv6. v2: Contains the IPv6 tcp/Ipv6 dccp patches as well. We have seen a few incidents lately where a dst_enty has been freed with a dangling TCP socket reference (sk->sk_dst_cache) pointing to that dst_entry. If the conditions/timings are right a crash then ensues when the freed dst_entry is referenced later on. A Common crashing back trace is: FireflyTeam#8 [] page_fault at ffffffff8163e648 [exception RIP: __tcp_ack_snd_check+74] . . FireflyTeam#9 [] tcp_rcv_established at ffffffff81580b64 FireflyTeam#10 [] tcp_v4_do_rcv at ffffffff8158b54a FireflyTeam#11 [] tcp_v4_rcv at ffffffff8158cd02 FireflyTeam#12 [] ip_local_deliver_finish at ffffffff815668f4 FireflyTeam#13 [] ip_local_deliver at ffffffff81566bd9 FireflyTeam#14 [] ip_rcv_finish at ffffffff8156656d FireflyTeam#15 [] ip_rcv at ffffffff81566f06 FireflyTeam#16 [] __netif_receive_skb_core at ffffffff8152b3a2 rockchip-linux#17 [] __netif_receive_skb at ffffffff8152b608 rockchip-linux#18 [] netif_receive_skb at ffffffff8152b690 rockchip-linux#19 [] vmxnet3_rq_rx_complete at ffffffffa015eeaf [vmxnet3] rockchip-linux#20 [] vmxnet3_poll_rx_only at ffffffffa015f32a [vmxnet3] rockchip-linux#21 [] net_rx_action at ffffffff8152bac2 rockchip-linux#22 [] __do_softirq at ffffffff81084b4f rockchip-linux#23 [] call_softirq at ffffffff8164845c rockchip-linux#24 [] do_softirq at ffffffff81016fc5 rockchip-linux#25 [] irq_exit at ffffffff81084ee5 rockchip-linux#26 [] do_IRQ at ffffffff81648ff8 Of course it may happen with other NIC drivers as well. It's found the freed dst_entry here: 224 static bool tcp_in_quickack_mode(struct sock *sk)↩ 225 {↩ 226 ▹ const struct inet_connection_sock *icsk = inet_csk(sk);↩ 227 ▹ const struct dst_entry *dst = __sk_dst_get(sk);↩ 228 ↩ 229 ▹ return (dst && dst_metric(dst, RTAX_QUICKACK)) ||↩ 230 ▹ ▹ (icsk->icsk_ack.quick && !icsk->icsk_ack.pingpong);↩ 231 }↩ But there are other backtraces attributed to the same freed dst_entry in netfilter code as well. All the vmcores showed 2 significant clues: - Remote hosts behind the default gateway had always been redirected to a different gateway. A rtable/dst_entry will be added for that host. Making more dst_entrys with lower reference counts. Making this more probable. - All vmcores showed a postitive LockDroppedIcmps value, e.g: LockDroppedIcmps 267 A closer look at the tcp_v4_err() handler revealed that do_redirect() will run regardless of whether user space has the socket locked. This can result in a race condition where the same dst_entry cached in sk->sk_dst_entry can be decremented twice for the same socket via: do_redirect()->__sk_dst_check()-> dst_release(). Which leads to the dst_entry being prematurely freed with another socket pointing to it via sk->sk_dst_cache and a subsequent crash. To fix this skip do_redirect() if usespace has the socket locked. Instead let the redirect take place later when user space does not have the socket locked. The dccp/IPv6 code is very similar in this respect, so fixing it there too. As Eric Garver pointed out the following commit now invalidates routes. Which can set the dst->obsolete flag so that ipv4_dst_check() returns null and triggers the dst_release(). Reusing the exit reason from the L2->L0 vmexit is wrong in this case, the reason must always be EXCEPTION_NMI when injecting an exception into L1 as a nested vmexit. syzkaller reported a double free [1], caused by the fact that tun driver was not updated properly when priv_destructor was added. When/if register_netdevice() fails, priv_destructor() must have been called already. Commit 350779a ("powerpc: Handle most loads and stores in instruction emulation code", 2017-08-30) changed the register usage in get_vr and put_vr with the aim of leaving the register number in r3 untouched on return. Unfortunately, r6 was not a good choice, as the callers as of 350779a store a MSR value in r6. Then, in commit c22435a ("powerpc: Emulate FP/vector/VSX loads/stores correctly when regs not live", 2017-08-30), the saving and restoring of the MSR got moved into get_vr and put_vr. Either way, the effect is that we put a value in MSR that only has the 0x3f8 bits non-zero, meaning that we are switching to 32-bit mode. That leads to a crash like this: Unable to handle kernel paging request for instruction fetch Faulting instruction address: 0x0007bea0 Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [FireflyTeam#12] LE SMP NR_CPUS=2048 NUMA PowerNV Modules linked in: vmx_crypto binfmt_misc ip_tables x_tables autofs4 crc32c_vpmsum CPU: 6 PID: 32659 Comm: trashy_testcase Tainted: G D 4.13.0-rc2-00313-gf3026f57e6ed-dirty rockchip-linux#23 task: c000000f1bb9e780 task.stack: c000000f1ba98000 NIP: 000000000007bea0 LR: c00000000007b054 CTR: c00000000007be70 REGS: c000000f1ba9b960 TRAP: 0400 Tainted: G D (4.13.0-rc2-00313-gf3026f57e6ed-dirty) MSR: 10000000400010a1 <HV,ME,IR,LE> CR: 48000228 XER: 00000000 CFAR: c00000000007be74 SOFTE: 1 GPR00: c00000000007b054 c000000f1ba9bbe0 c000000000e6e000 000000000000001d GPR04: c000000f1ba9bc00 c00000000007be70 00000000000000e8 9000000002009033 GPR08: 0000000002000000 100000000282f033 000000000b0a0900 0000000000001009 GPR12: 0000000000000000 c00000000fd42100 0706050303020100 a5a5a5a5a5a5a5a5 GPR16: 2e2e2e2e2e2de70c 2e2e2e2e2e2e2e2d 0000000000ff00ff 0606040202020000 GPR20: 000000000000005b ffffffffffffffff 0000000003020100 0000000000000000 GPR24: c000000f1ab90020 c000000f1ba9bc00 0000000000000001 0000000000000001 GPR28: c000000f1ba9bc90 c000000f1ba9bea0 000000000b0a0908 0000000000000001 NIP [000000000007bea0] 0x7bea0 LR [c00000000007b054] emulate_loadstore+0x1044/0x1280 Call Trace: [c000000f1ba9bbe0] [c000000000076b80] analyse_instr+0x60/0x34f0 (unreliable) [c000000f1ba9bc70] [c00000000007b7ec] emulate_step+0x23c/0x544 [c000000f1ba9bce0] [c000000000053424] arch_uprobe_skip_sstep+0x24/0x40 [c000000f1ba9bd00] [c00000000024b2f8] uprobe_notify_resume+0x598/0xba0 [c000000f1ba9be00] [c00000000001c284] do_notify_resume+0xd4/0xf0 [c000000f1ba9be30] [c00000000000bd44] ret_from_except_lite+0x70/0x74 Instruction dump: XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX ---[ end trace a7ae7a7f3e0256b5 ]--- To fix this, we just revert to using r3 as before, since the callers don't rely on r3 being left unmodified. [ Upstream commit d8655e7 ] Commit 9da21b1 ("EDAC: Poll timeout cannot be zero, p2") assumes edac_mc_poll_msec to be unsigned long, but the type of the variable still remained as int. Setting edac_mc_poll_msec can trigger out-of-bounds write. Reproducer: # echo 1001 > /sys/module/edac_core/parameters/edac_mc_poll_msec KASAN report: BUG: KASAN: global-out-of-bounds in edac_set_poll_msec+0x140/0x150 Write of size 8 at addr ffffffffb91b2d00 by task bash/1996 CPU: 1 PID: 1996 Comm: bash Not tainted 5.2.0-rc6+ rockchip-linux#23 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.12.0-2.fc30 04/01/2014 Call Trace: dump_stack+0xca/0x13e print_address_description.cold+0x5/0x246 __kasan_report.cold+0x75/0x9a ? edac_set_poll_msec+0x140/0x150 kasan_report+0xe/0x20 edac_set_poll_msec+0x140/0x150 ? dimmdev_location_show+0x30/0x30 ? vfs_lock_file+0xe0/0xe0 ? _raw_spin_lock+0x87/0xe0 param_attr_store+0x1b5/0x310 ? param_array_set+0x4f0/0x4f0 module_attr_store+0x58/0x80 ? module_attr_show+0x80/0x80 sysfs_kf_write+0x13d/0x1a0 kernfs_fop_write+0x2bc/0x460 ? sysfs_kf_bin_read+0x270/0x270 ? kernfs_notify+0x1f0/0x1f0 __vfs_write+0x81/0x100 vfs_write+0x1e1/0x560 ksys_write+0x126/0x250 ? __ia32_sys_read+0xb0/0xb0 ? do_syscall_64+0x1f/0x390 do_syscall_64+0xc1/0x390 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x49/0xbe RIP: 0033:0x7fa7caa5e970 Code: 73 01 c3 48 8b 0d 28 d5 2b 00 f7 d8 64 89 01 48 83 c8 ff c3 66 0f 1f 44 00 00 83 3d 99 2d 2c 00 00 75 10 b8 01 00 00 00 04 RSP: 002b:00007fff6acfdfe8 EFLAGS: 00000246 ORIG_RAX: 0000000000000001 RAX: ffffffffffffffda RBX: 0000000000000005 RCX: 00007fa7caa5e970 RDX: 0000000000000005 RSI: 0000000000e95c08 RDI: 0000000000000001 RBP: 0000000000e95c08 R08: 00007fa7cad1e760 R09: 00007fa7cb36a700 R10: 0000000000000073 R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 0000000000000005 R13: 0000000000000001 R14: 00007fa7cad1d600 R15: 0000000000000005 The buggy address belongs to the variable: edac_mc_poll_msec+0x0/0x40 Memory state around the buggy address: ffffffffb91b2c00: 00 00 00 00 fa fa fa fa 00 00 00 00 fa fa fa fa ffffffffb91b2c80: 00 00 00 00 fa fa fa fa 00 00 00 00 fa fa fa fa >ffffffffb91b2d00: 04 fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 04 fa fa fa fa fa fa fa ^ ffffffffb91b2d80: 04 fa fa fa fa fa fa fa 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ffffffffb91b2e00: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 Fix it by changing the type of edac_mc_poll_msec to unsigned int. The reason why this patch adopts unsigned int rather than unsigned long is msecs_to_jiffies() assumes arg to be unsigned int. We can avoid integer conversion bugs and unsigned int will be large enough for edac_mc_poll_msec. The only difference is bpf_send_signal() helper instead of bpf_get_stack() helper. The above deadlock is triggered with a perf_sw_event. Similar to Commit eac9153, the below almost identical reproducer used tracepoint point sched/sched_switch so the issue can be easily caught. /* stress_test.c */ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <sys/mman.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> #include <fcntl.h> #define THREAD_COUNT 1000 char *filename; void *worker(void *p) { void *ptr; int fd; char *pptr; fd = open(filename, O_RDONLY); if (fd < 0) return NULL; while (1) { struct timespec ts = {0, 1000 + rand() % 2000}; ptr = mmap(NULL, 4096 * 64, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, fd, 0); usleep(1); if (ptr == MAP_FAILED) { printf("failed to mmap\n"); break; } munmap(ptr, 4096 * 64); usleep(1); pptr = malloc(1); usleep(1); pptr[0] = 1; usleep(1); free(pptr); usleep(1); nanosleep(&ts, NULL); } close(fd); return NULL; } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { void *ptr; int i; pthread_t threads[THREAD_COUNT]; if (argc < 2) return 0; filename = argv[1]; for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) { if (pthread_create(threads + i, NULL, worker, NULL)) { fprintf(stderr, "Error creating thread\n"); return 0; } } for (i = 0; i < THREAD_COUNT; i++) pthread_join(threads[i], NULL); return 0; } and the following command: 1. run `stress_test /bin/ls` in one windown 2. hack bcc trace.py with the following change: # --- a/tools/trace.py # +++ b/tools/trace.py @@ -513,6 +513,7 @@ BPF_PERF_OUTPUT(%s); __data.tgid = __tgid; __data.pid = __pid; bpf_get_current_comm(&__data.comm, sizeof(__data.comm)); + bpf_send_signal(10); %s %s %s.perf_submit(%s, &__data, sizeof(__data)); 3. in a different window run ./trace.py -p $(pidof stress_test) t:sched:sched_switch The deadlock can be reproduced in our production system. Similar to Song's fix, the fix is to delay sending signal if irqs is disabled to avoid deadlocks involving with rq_lock. With this change, my above stress-test in our production system won't cause deadlock any more. I also implemented a scale-down version of reproducer in the selftest (a subsequent commit). With latest bpf-next, it complains for the following potential deadlock. This is not exactly the callstack in our production environment, but sympotom is similar and both locks are using spin_lock_irqsave() to acquire the lock, and both involves rq_lock. The fix to delay sending signal when irq is disabled also fixed this issue. This is because btrfs_backref_release_cache() will cycle through all of the cache->leaves nodes and free them up. However btrfs_backref_error_cleanup() freed the backref node with btrfs_backref_free_node(), which simply kfree()d the backref node without unlinking it from the cache. Change this to a btrfs_backref_drop_node(), which does the appropriate cleanup and removes the node from the cache->leaves list, so when we go to free the remaining cache we don't trip over items we've already dropped. commit eddda68 upstream. A weird KASAN problem that Zygo reported could have been easily caught if we checked for basic things in our backref freeing code. We have two methods of freeing a backref node - btrfs_backref_free_node: this just is kfree() essentially. - btrfs_backref_drop_node: this actually unlinks the node and cleans up everything and then calls btrfs_backref_free_node(). We should mostly be using btrfs_backref_drop_node(), to make sure the node is properly unlinked from the backref cache, and only use btrfs_backref_free_node() when we know the node isn't actually linked to the backref cache. We made a mistake here and thus got the KASAN splat. Make this style of issue easier to find by adding some ASSERT()'s to btrfs_backref_free_node() and adjusting our deletion stuff to properly init the list so we can rely on list_empty() checks working properly. Fix port I/O string accessors such as `insb', `outsb', etc. which use the physical PCI port I/O address rather than the corresponding memory mapping to get at the requested location, which in turn breaks at least accesses made by our parport driver to a PCIe parallel port such as: PCI parallel port detected: 1415:c118, I/O at 0x1000(0x1008), IRQ 20 parport0: PC-style at 0x1000 (0x1008), irq 20, using FIFO [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP] causing a memory access fault: Unable to handle kernel access to user memory without uaccess routines at virtual address 0000000000001008 Oops [#1] Modules linked in: CPU: 1 PID: 350 Comm: cat Not tainted 6.0.0-rc2-00283-g10d4879f9ef0-dirty rockchip-linux#23 Hardware name: SiFive HiFive Unmatched A00 (DT) epc : parport_pc_fifo_write_block_pio+0x266/0x416 ra : parport_pc_fifo_write_block_pio+0xb4/0x416 epc : ffffffff80542c3e ra : ffffffff80542a8c sp : ffffffd88899fc60 gp : ffffffff80fa2700 tp : ffffffd882b1e900 t0 : ffffffd883d0b000 t1 : ffffffffff000002 t2 : 4646393043330a38 s0 : ffffffd88899fcf0 s1 : 0000000000001000 a0 : 0000000000000010 a1 : 0000000000000000 a2 : ffffffd883d0a010 a3 : 0000000000000023 a4 : 00000000ffff8fbb a5 : ffffffd883d0a001 a6 : 0000000100000000 a7 : ffffffc800000000 s2 : ffffffffff000002 s3 : ffffffff80d28880 s4 : ffffffff80fa1f50 s5 : 0000000000001008 s6 : 0000000000000008 s7 : ffffffd883d0a000 s8 : 0004000000000000 s9 : ffffffff80dc1d80 s10: ffffffd8807e4000 s11: 0000000000000000 t3 : 00000000000000ff t4 : 393044410a303930 t5 : 0000000000001000 t6 : 0000000000040000 status: 0000000200000120 badaddr: 0000000000001008 cause: 000000000000000f [<ffffffff80543212>] parport_pc_compat_write_block_pio+0xfe/0x200 [<ffffffff8053bbc0>] parport_write+0x46/0xf8 [<ffffffff8050530e>] lp_write+0x158/0x2d2 [<ffffffff80185716>] vfs_write+0x8e/0x2c2 [<ffffffff80185a74>] ksys_write+0x52/0xc2 [<ffffffff80185af2>] sys_write+0xe/0x16 [<ffffffff80003770>] ret_from_syscall+0x0/0x2 ---[ end trace 0000000000000000 ]--- For simplicity address the problem by adding PCI_IOBASE to the physical address requested in the respective wrapper macros only, observing that the raw accessors such as `__insb', `__outsb', etc. are not supposed to be used other than by said macros. Remove the cast to `long' that is no longer needed on `addr' now that it is used as an offset from PCI_IOBASE and add parentheses around `addr' needed for predictable evaluation in macro expansion. No need to make said adjustments in separate changes given that current code is gravely broken and does not ever work. Signed-off-by: Maciej W. Retry loops on RT might loop forever when the modifying side was preempted. Add cpu_chill() to replace cpu_relax(). cpu_chill() defaults to cpu_relax() for non RT. On RT it puts the looping task to sleep for a tick so the preempted task can make progress. Steven Rostedt changed it to use a hrtimer instead of msleep(): | |Ulrich Obergfell pointed out that cpu_chill() calls msleep() which is woken |up by the ksoftirqd running the TIMER softirq. But as the cpu_chill() is |called from softirq context, it may block the ksoftirqd() from running, in |which case, it may never wake up the msleep() causing the deadlock. + bigeasy later changed to schedule_hrtimeout() |If a task calls cpu_chill() and gets woken up by a regular or spurious |wakeup and has a signal pending, then it exits the sleep loop in |do_nanosleep() and sets up the restart block. If restart->nanosleep.type is |not TI_NONE then this results in accessing a stale user pointer from a |previously interrupted syscall and a copy to user based on the stale |pointer or a BUG() when 'type' is not supported in nanosleep_copyout(). + bigeasy: add PF_NOFREEZE: | [....] Waiting for /dev to be fully populated... | ===================================== | [ BUG: udevd/229 still has locks held! ] | 3.12.11-rt17 rockchip-linux#23 Not tainted | ------------------------------------- | 1 lock held by udevd/229: | #0: (&type->i_mutex_dir_key#2){+.+.+.}, at: lookup_slow+0x28/0x98 | | stack backtrace: | CPU: 0 PID: 229 Comm: udevd Not tainted 3.12.11-rt17 rockchip-linux#23 | (unwind_backtrace+0x0/0xf8) from (show_stack+0x10/0x14) | (show_stack+0x10/0x14) from (dump_stack+0x74/0xbc) | (dump_stack+0x74/0xbc) from (do_nanosleep+0x120/0x160) | (do_nanosleep+0x120/0x160) from (hrtimer_nanosleep+0x90/0x110) | (hrtimer_nanosleep+0x90/0x110) from (cpu_chill+0x30/0x38) | (cpu_chill+0x30/0x38) from (dentry_kill+0x158/0x1ec) | (dentry_kill+0x158/0x1ec) from (dput+0x74/0x15c) | (dput+0x74/0x15c) from (lookup_real+0x4c/0x50) | (lookup_real+0x4c/0x50) from (__lookup_hash+0x34/0x44) | (__lookup_hash+0x34/0x44) from (lookup_slow+0x38/0x98) | (lookup_slow+0x38/0x98) from (path_lookupat+0x208/0x7fc) | (path_lookupat+0x208/0x7fc) from (filename_lookup+0x20/0x60) | (filename_lookup+0x20/0x60) from (user_path_at_empty+0x50/0x7c) | (user_path_at_empty+0x50/0x7c) from (user_path_at+0x14/0x1c) | (user_path_at+0x14/0x1c) from (vfs_fstatat+0x48/0x94) | (vfs_fstatat+0x48/0x94) from (SyS_stat64+0x14/0x30) | (SyS_stat64+0x14/0x30) from (ret_fast_syscall+0x0/0x48) Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Sebastian Andrzej Siewior <bigeasy@linutronix.de>
I'm having issues with booting Linux on my RK3288 Firefly Reload board. With some configurations of kernel command line options and peripherals in the dts, the kernel hangs during boot: it hangs around the point where late initcalls are being executed. No stack trace or anything else is printed on the console, the system just hangs. This happens mostly when booting the kernel with the "quiet" command line option, but I have seen it happening also without this option. I tried removing various peripherals from the device tree (SD slot, eMMC, USB ports, I2C, UART) to single out possible sources of the problem, but the kernel still hangs without these peripherals.
I'm using an LVDS panel as a display interface, with the LVDS driver taken from this repository and added to mainline kernel (tried with 4.11 and 4.12 mainline kernel versions), but the problem is not in the LVDS stuff, because I have seen the system hanging with the mainline kernel (which doesn't have support for LVDS) too.
Are there any known issues that may cause the kernel to hang with this SoC?
