Better error messages for build, added -j

confirmed successful installation on graham, cedar and nlogn
c_netCDf and FFTW seem to be 'touchy' often failing with
[Makefile:683: install-recursive]
which I believe is due to the use of the -j parameter, so that is disabled for those builds
