About Saralweb Minimum Wages

The Saralweb Minimum Wages Project provides data on minimum wages applicable in India, issued by central government and respective state governments in csv and json formats.

Minimum Wages in India

Minimum wages rates in India are determined by both Central Government as well as State Governments, and are defined on the basis of occupation, sector, region and employees' skill set and are fixed at time rate, piece rate, guaranteed time rate and overtime rate. Labour law compliance are ensured by labour law inspectors under section 19 of Minimum Wages Act,1948 (MWA,1948). In event of non compliance under section 22 of MWA,1948 , the violators may be punished to pay a fine or imprisonment and may also require a payment of arrears to workers along with the compensation for delay.

Challenges with Implementation of Minimum Wages

The diversity in location and nature of work along and keeping up with revisions has been an issue for Human Resource (HR) and Industrial Relation professionals.

Terminology*

(i) Unskilled: An unskilled worker is involved in simple duties and tasks that require the experience of little or no previous experience or skills.

(ii) Semi-skilled: A semiskilled worker's work generally is of general specified routine nature.

(iii) Skilled: A skilled employee is capable of working efficiently of exercising considerable independent and judgement can be made.

(iv) Highly Skilled: A highly skilled worker is capable of working efficiently and supervises the other skilled employees.
