@vlsi, would this break anything in the way the build is configured?

I wanted gradle plugin to support Gradle 6.x (so the ones who use Gradle 6 could use the plugin without migrating the build first), and it would require building with 6.8 to make it possible.

Should we add a matrix to the gradle tests to see that the gradle plugin tests still work with 6.x?

AFAIK it will fail.
The current minimal supported version is 7.2, however, I did not invest time in expanding the set of supported versions.
