Simutrans github test wiki

Welcome to the simutrans-github-project-page wiki!

This can be our sandbox for the time being. At some point we might want to decide to keep the wiki together with the project page or attach it to the repositories.

The project page is dormant for years, mostly because of lack of interest. If we revive the wiki it can serve as the portal to the wiki and to the repositories.

You can find useful information in about-github-wikis.

We also have to decide which license we ought to put this under.

  • CC0 That way the wiki content can be copied from the wiki, for example, to in-game help, other wikis, steam help pages, without tracking the contributors. It is problematic in several jurisdictions where a publisher must always be able to attribute authors. This appears of no concern however, as the wiki is hosted and published in a jurisdiction where this matters.

  • CC-BY This is also very portable, but we have to track contributors.

  • FDL Gnu Free Document Licence, content of the old media-wiki was licensed under this, it appears to be a good license for this purpose. Since there were very few contributors, we can ask them to change the licence however, and write the rest new, which wasn't a lot anyway.

  • CC-BY-SA, in effect nearly the same as FDL, FDL is preferable as it fits better and is compatible to old content

  • Artistic licence. Simutrans sourcecode is under this licence. It is a software licence however, and perhaps not so well suited for documentation. Paksets are not necessarily using the same licence however. There is also no need to have the wiki under the same licence.

  • public domain, this appears to be in effect the same as CC0. If that is indeed so, the latter is clearer, and thus preferable.

What speaks very much for a github wiki is the question of ownership. The simutrans account already has several owners. These can easily drop out and new ones can be added. We don't have to worry that it gets taken hostage by an owner. Most likely it is also easy to clone it and spread backups.
