I appreciate this contribution and would like to thank you for your patience during this long delay. I somehow missed this PR when it first came in. Before merging it, I’d like to have some tests indicating which backmatter syntax is supported. It would also be useful to have a small sample document showing how the new syntax is used. No worries if you don’t have time to do this after waiting almost two years, but I feel that it’s important for all major features to be tested before merging. |

This PR is in support for a backmatter PR (see softcover/softcover#206)
