Mark One-b? Whut?

So when we finally got to playing around with this design, our colleague Egbert brought his own breadboard PCB and a Wemos D1 mini clone, because he wanted to add Wifi capabilities...

Bill of materials

  • Wemos D1 mini (or clone)
  • A couple of WS2812 LED chips (we use 4 or 6)
  • Double Side Prototype PCB 25x35mm
  • Tactile button 6x6x6
  • Some wire
  • Pingpong ball
  • Filament for your 3D printer (did not design an STL for this yet)

Changes to Mark One

Basically the approach for the Wemos is similar to build. There are two caveats:

  • In the code, pins are labelled differently: pin 2 becomes pin D2, pin 5 becomes pin D5
  • Even though the Wemos connects to a standard micro-USB with 5v power, it runs on 3.3v internally. Pin output is also 3.3 volt, which is lower than required by the WS2812 LED's. In practice this does work in most cases, but you may run in to trouble, especially if you have longer wiring to the first LED chip. In that case you need some workarounds
