Specimen, Observation, and Occurrence

The Darwin Core was originally constructed with the aim of accommodating (having the ability to represent) specimens and observations used in species distribution modeling (SDM), as well as specimens contained of biodiversity collections that might not be appropriate for SDM.

  • An occurrence can be a specimen or an observation.
  • Not all specimens represent (natural) occurrences.

How should we represent that a specimen or observation is not a natural occurrence? Should this distinction be represented in the class-subclass hierarchy, or should we use other fields to assist the aggregators and end-users filter out inappropriate records? Note that we now have the term "establishmentMeans" in DwC to serve this function, though it might be unpopulated in most records/datasets. (?)
