What this PR does / why we need it:
This PR introduces an e2e test suite with a first set of basic e2e tests based on the example shard implementation.
This will increase confidence in PRs, especially dependency PRs.
More extensive e2e tests can be added later on. For now, the focus is on getting the whole machinery off the ground.
