MusicScoreType
New item type proposal: Music Score
Explanation
English Name: Music Score
Zotero Name: musicScore
Fields:
Mainly like “Book”/book
“ISMN”/ismn identifier. Perhaps needs a new field in CSL? Is it possible to have both an ISMN and an ISBN?
Arranger, composer, lyricist, librettist as creator roles. Not sure about CSL for them.
“Number”/number, the opus number, often using a system specific to the composer.
“Composition Date”/compositionDate, different from publication date, mapped to “event-date” in CSL. This distinction could be made for other types as well, even book— perhaps it shouldn’t be made here.
“Key”/key
“Instrumentation”/instrumentation
In light of the comment that “[i]deally, a document type for scores would permit individual entries for each piece in a compilation, otherwise every piece needs its own entry”, I wonder if we should be treating this more like a book section or like a book (i.e., part of a whole, or itself a whole). I’m inclined to treat it as the latter and treat the relationship of scores in compilations to the compilations themselves as part of the hierarchical model at a later date.
Implications for CSL
Unclear. The creator roles certainly need to be mapped to something — either existing roles or new ones.
Discussion
asallen on the forums writes:
Music catalogers said that there are two unique items for musical scores, and they gave me MARC field numbers for them:
028 = publisher numbers and plate numbers
024 = ISMN # (like ISBN, but not around for as much time, so not all scores have them)
As I mentioned in previous posts, just the ability to have composer in the author field, along with lyricist/librettist, should be very useful. Also, a unique “musical score” icon would be helpful for quick identification purposes as well.
