btrfs compressed root volume fails to boot #7

This is probably an upstream issue in 4.11, try building the linux-hardened package with the patch line disabled. |
Thanks for your time and looking at this @thestinger. Arch is currently on 4.10, I'm working on compiling 4.11 w/o the patch. I'll close this for now, since it's extremely likely it's upstream; I also don't have this issue on ext4 and 4.11-hardened. Lastly, the fs tree and btrfs specifically had a bit of work done in 4.11. |

commit 624f5ab upstream. syzkaller reported a NULL pointer dereference in asn1_ber_decoder(). It can be reproduced by the following command, assuming CONFIG_PKCS7_TEST_KEY=y: keyctl add pkcs7_test desc '' @s The bug is that if the data buffer is empty, an integer underflow occurs in the following check: if (unlikely(dp >= datalen - 1)) goto data_overrun_error; This results in the NULL data pointer being dereferenced. Fix it by checking for 'datalen - dp < 2' instead. Also fix the similar check for 'dp >= datalen - n' later in the same function. That one possibly could result in a buffer overread. The NULL pointer dereference was reproducible using the "pkcs7_test" key type but not the "asymmetric" key type because the "asymmetric" key type checks for a 0-length payload before calling into the ASN.1 decoder but the "pkcs7_test" key type does not. commit 12d41a0 upstream. When setting the secret with the software Diffie-Hellman implementation, if allocating 'g' failed (e.g. if it was longer than MAX_EXTERN_MPI_BITS), then 'p' was freed twice: once immediately, and once later when the crypto_kpp tfm was destroyed. Fix it by using dh_free_ctx() (renamed to dh_clear_ctx()) in the error paths, as that correctly sets the pointers to NULL. commit 199512b upstream. If 'p' is 0 for the software Diffie-Hellman implementation, then dh_max_size() returns 0. In the case of KEYCTL_DH_COMPUTE, this causes ZERO_SIZE_PTR to be passed to sg_init_one(), which with CONFIG_DEBUG_SG=y triggers the 'BUG_ON(!virt_addr_valid(buf));' in sg_set_buf(). Fix this by making crypto_dh_decode_key() reject 0 for 'p'. p=0 makes no sense for any DH implementation because 'p' is supposed to be a prime number. Moreover, 'mod 0' is not mathematically defined. commit 12d41a0 upstream. [ Upstream commit e64e469 ] Heiner reported a lockdep splat [1] This is caused by attempting GFP_KERNEL allocation while RCU lock is held and BH blocked. We believe that addrconf_verify_rtnl() could run for a long period, so instead of using GFP_ATOMIC here as Ido suggested, we should break the critical section and restart it after the allocation. The root cause is as follows: When the pages are written to swap device during swapping out in swap_writepage(), zswap (fontswap) is tried to compress the pages to improve performance. But zswap (frontswap) will treat THP as a normal page, so only the head page is saved. After swapping in, tail pages will not be restored to their original contents, causing memory corruption in the applications. This is fixed by refusing to save page in the frontswap store functions if the page is a THP. So that the THP will be swapped out to swap device. Another choice is to split THP if frontswap is enabled. But it is found that the frontswap enabling isn't flexible. For example, if CONFIG_ZSWAP=y (cannot be module), frontswap will be enabled even if zswap itself isn't enabled. Frontswap has multiple backends, to make it easy for one backend to enable THP support, the THP checking is put in backend frontswap store functions instead of the general interfaces. [ Upstream commit d754941 ] If, for any reason, userland shuts down iscsi transport interfaces before proper logouts - like when logging in to LUNs manually, without logging out on server shutdown, or when automated scripts can't umount/logout from logged LUNs - kernel will hang forever on its sd_sync_cache() logic, after issuing the SYNCHRONIZE_CACHE cmd to all still existent paths. PID: 1 TASK: ffff8801a69b8000 CPU: 1 COMMAND: "systemd-shutdow" #0 [ffff8801a69c3a30] __schedule at ffffffff8183e9ee #1 [ffff8801a69c3a80] schedule at ffffffff8183f0d5 #2 [ffff8801a69c3a98] schedule_timeout at ffffffff81842199 #3 [ffff8801a69c3b40] io_schedule_timeout at ffffffff8183e604 #4 [ffff8801a69c3b70] wait_for_completion_io_timeout at ffffffff8183fc6c #5 [ffff8801a69c3bd0] blk_execute_rq at ffffffff813cfe10 #6 [ffff8801a69c3c88] scsi_execute at ffffffff815c3fc7 #7 [ffff8801a69c3cc8] scsi_execute_req_flags at ffffffff815c60fe #8 [ffff8801a69c3d30] sd_sync_cache at ffffffff815d37d7 #9 [ffff8801a69c3da8] sd_shutdown at ffffffff815d3c3c This happens because iscsi_eh_cmd_timed_out(), the transport layer timeout helper, would tell the queue timeout function (scsi_times_out) to reset the request timer over and over, until the session state is back to logged in state. Unfortunately, during server shutdown, this might never happen again. Other option would be "not to handle" the issue in the transport layer. That would trigger the error handler logic, which would also need the session state to be logged in again. Best option, for such case, is to tell upper layers that the command was handled during the transport layer error handler helper, marking it as DID_NO_CONNECT, which will allow completion and inform about the problem. After the session was marked as ISCSI_STATE_FAILED, due to the first timeout during the server shutdown phase, all subsequent cmds will fail to be queued, allowing upper logic to fail faster. Commit 24b6d41 "mm: pass the vmem_altmap to vmemmap_free" converted the vmemmap_free() path to pass the altmap argument all the way through the call chain rather than looking it up based on the page. Unfortunately that ends up over freeing altmap allocated pages in some cases since free_pagetable() is used to free both memmap space and pte space, where only the memmap stored in huge pages uses altmap allocations. Given that altmap allocations for memmap space are special cased in vmemmap_populate_hugepages() add a symmetric / special case free_hugepage_table() to handle altmap freeing, and cleanup the unneeded passing of altmap to leaf functions that do not require it. Without this change the sanity check accounting in devm_memremap_pages_release() will throw a warning with the following signature. nd_pmem pfn10.1: devm_memremap_pages_release: failed to free all reserved pages WARNING: CPU: 44 PID: 3539 at kernel/memremap.c:310 devm_memremap_pages_release+0x1c7/0x220 CPU: 44 PID: 3539 Comm: ndctl Tainted: G L 4.16.0-rc1-linux-stable #7 RIP: 0010:devm_memremap_pages_release+0x1c7/0x220 [..] Call Trace: release_nodes+0x225/0x270 device_release_driver_internal+0x15d/0x210 bus_remove_device+0xe2/0x160 device_del+0x130/0x310 ? klist_release+0x56/0x100 ? nd_region_notify+0xc0/0xc0 [libnvdimm] device_unregister+0x16/0x60 This was missed in testing since not all configurations will trigger this warning. We don't force evsel ids allocation when we have single event, because it's not needed. However we need it when we are in pipe mode even for single event as a key for evsel update event. Fixing this by forcing evsel ids allocation event for single event, when we are in pipe mode. Ido Schimmel says: ==================== mlxsw: Various fixes This patchset contains various small fixes for mlxsw. Patch GrapheneOS#1 fixes a warning generated by switchdev core when the driver fails to insert an MDB entry in the commit phase. Patches GrapheneOS#2-GrapheneOS#4 fix a warning in check_flush_dependency() that can be triggered when a work item in a WQ_MEM_RECLAIM workqueue tries to flush a non-WQ_MEM_RECLAIM workqueue. It seems that the semantics of the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag are not very clear [1] and that various patches have been sent to remove it from various workqueues throughout the kernel [2][3][4] in order to silence the warning. These patches do the same for the workqueues created by mlxsw that probably should not have been created with this flag in the first place. Patch GrapheneOS#5 fixes a regression where an IP address cannot be assigned to a VRF upper due to erroneous MAC validation check. Patch GrapheneOS#6 adds a test case. Patch GrapheneOS#7 adjusts Spectrum-2 shared buffer configuration to be compatible with Spectrum-1. The problem and fix are described in detail in the commit message. Please consider patches GrapheneOS#1-GrapheneOS#5 for 5.0.y. I verified they apply cleanly. Ido Schimmel says: ==================== mlxsw: Various fixes This patchset contains various fixes for mlxsw. Patch GrapheneOS#1 fixes an hash polarization problem when a nexthop device is a LAG device. This is caused by the fact that the same seed is used for the LAG and ECMP hash functions. Patch GrapheneOS#2 fixes an issue in which the driver fails to refresh a nexthop neighbour after it becomes dead. This prevents the nexthop from ever being written to the adjacency table and used to forward traffic. Patch Patch GrapheneOS#4 fixes a wrong extraction of TOS value in flower offload code. Patch GrapheneOS#5 is a test case. Patch GrapheneOS#6 works around a buffer issue in Spectrum-2 by reducing the default sizes of the shared buffer pools. Patch GrapheneOS#7 prevents prio-tagged packets from entering the switch when PVID is removed from the bridge port. Revert the commit bd293d0. The proper fix has been made available with commit d0a255e ("loop: set PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO for the worker thread"). Note that the fix offered by commit bd293d0 doesn't really prevent the deadlock from occuring - if we look at the stacktrace reported by Junxiao Bi, we see that it hangs in bit_wait_io and not on the mutex - i.e. it has already successfully taken the mutex. Changing the mutex from mutex_lock to mutex_trylock won't help with deadlocks that happen afterwards. I have a btrfs compressed root volume. When I try to boot it on the hardened kernel, it panics:
Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Using version 4.11.e on ArchLinux; could be a 4.11 bug upstream now that I think of it.
Will work on getting more info, end of trace (apologies, I need to get a better test environment, it's on a vps):
