We arrived at the previous default rate of 10% back in #59379. This was back when we were creating real tracing spans for all statements, and for sampled statements, we were propagating additional stats payloads. Consequently what #59379 ended up measuring (and finding the overhead acceptable) for was the performance hit we would incur for propagating stats payloads for statements already using real tracing spans. Since then, the landscape has changed. Notably we introduced #61777, which made it so that we were only using real tracing spans for sampled statements. This was done after performance analysis in #59424 showed that the use of real tracing spans in all statements resulted in tremendous overhead, for no real benefit. What this now leaves us with is a sampling rate that was tuned by only considering the stats payload overhead. What we want now is to also consider the overhead of using real tracing spans for sampled statements, vs. not. Doing this analysis gives us a very different picture for what the default rate should be. --- To find out what the overhead for sampled statements are currently, we experimented with kv95/enc=false/nodes=1/cpu=32. It's a simple benchmark that does little more than one-off statements, so should give us a concise picture of the sampling overhead. We ran six experiments in total (each corresponding to a pair of read+write rows), done in groups of three (each group corresponding to a table below). Each run in turn is comprised of 10 iterations of kv95, and what's varied between each run is the default sampling rate. We have ideas for how that can be improved (prototyped in #62227), but they're much too invasive to backport to 21.1. It's unfortunate that we only discovered the overhead this late in the development cycle. It was due to two major reasons: - #59992 landed late in the cycle, and enabled tracing for realsies (by propagating real tracing spans across rpc boundaries). We had done sanity checking for the tracing overhead before this point, but failed to realize that #59992 would merit re-analysis. - The test that alerted us to the degradation (tpccbench) had be persistently failing for a myriad of other reasons, so we didn't learn until too late that tracing was the latest offendor. tpccbench also doesn't deal with VM overload well (something #62361 hopes to address), and after tracing was enabled for realsies, this was the dominant failure mode. This resulted in perf data not making it's way to roachperf, which further hid possible indicators we had a major regression on our hands. We also didn't have a healthy process looking at roachperf on a continual basis, something we're looking to rectify going forward. We would've picked up on this regression had we been closely monitoring the kv95 charts. Release note: None

79911: opt: refactor and test lookup join key column and expr generation r=mgartner a=mgartner #### opt: simplify fetching outer column in CustomFuncs.findComputedColJoinEquality Previously, `CustomFuncs.findComputedColJoinEquality` used `CustomFuncs.OuterCols` to retrieve the outer columns of computed column expressions. `CustomFuncs.OuterCols` returns the cached outer columns in the expression if it is a `memo.ScalarPropsExpr`, and falls back to calculating the outer columns with `memo.BuildSharedProps` otherwise. Computed column expressions are never `memo.ScalarPropsExpr`s, so we use just use `memo.BuildSharedProps` directly. Release note: None #### opt: make RemapCols a method on Factory instead of CustomFuncs Release note: None #### opt: use partial-index-reduced filters when building lookup expressions This commit makes a minor change to `generateLookupJoinsImpl`. Previously, equality filters were extracted from the original `ON` filters. Now they are extracted from filters that have been reduced by partial index implication. This has no effect on behavior because equality filters that reference columns in two tables cannot exist in partial index predicates, so they will never be eliminated during partial index implication. Logic for determining the key columns and lookup expressions for lookup joins has been moved to `lookupJoin.ConstraintBuilder`. This allows cockroach to backup and restore data to Azure Storage Accounts outside the main Azure Public Cloud. For backwards compatibility, this defaults to "AzurePublicCloud" if AZURE_ENVIRONMENT is not specified. The current tenant cost model has several problems: 1. It only takes batches into account. It ignores the requests in each read and write batch (e.g. GetRequest, CPutRequest, etc). For example, lookup joins typically send a small number of read batches with a large number of requests in each batch, which resulted in the model greatly under-costing queries containing them. 2. It does not take the replication factor into account. This does not matter much right now, because the replication factor is always 3 for Serverless. But eventually we will allow developers to change the replication factor for tables, and will need to charge proportionally more in that case. 3. It processes batches at the highest level of DistSender, before batches have been split by range. The upcoming Streamer component will make the count and size of these batches unpredictable and difficult for the model to cost. While the already-split batches sent to leaseholders at the lower level of DistSender have their own predictability issues, they should be better once Streamer is runnning. 4. Related to cockroachdb#2 and cockroachdb#3, DistSender cannot accurately cost either read or write batches until the replication factor is known in the case of write batches, and until a response is received in the case of read batches. This calls into questions its current behavior of throttling based on the content of requests. Read batches in particular will not throttle until outstanding debt has reached fairly high levels, because the read request has a cost close to zero. 5. If an error occurs during message transmission, RUs are still charged against the tenant. We'd prefer to not charge customers if there are internal network or server problems that are causing errors, since those conditions are generally not caused by them or under their control. The new cost model takes batches, requests, and replication factor into account. It is also based on a larger number of training scenarios, and so is quite a bit more accurate for scenarios like IMPORT and TPC-C. Rather than waiting based on the content of a read/write request batch, it waits based on the average size of recent batches. It does not charge RUs in error cases. Release note: None

106502: batcheval: delete flaky integration test r=aliher1911 a=aliher1911 TestLeaseCommandLearnerReplica is fundamentally flaky as commit can't retry all underlying replication failures and acceptable failure causes are not exposed on the higher levels where test operates. What test is supposed to verify that failures to propose with invalid lease are not causing pipelined writes to fail but are retried. More details described in original PR #35261 where this test is introduced. In absence of direct controls of that, test is trying to move leases between replicas, but this action could cause different failures to happen which can't be filtered out. For example: `failed to repropose 0b9a11f4bef0e3d3 at idx 16 with new lease index: [NotLeaseHolderError] ‹reproposal failed due to closed timestamp›` and `stale proposal: command was proposed under lease #2 but is being applied under lease: ...` While closed timestamp could be mitigated by changing settings, second one is opaque to the caller and hard to filter out.
