Offline maps with hillshading

Cruiser 5 will have offline maps with hillshading and digital elevation model data.

• Available in "Settings | Map | Hillshading"
  where you can also adjust the hillshading magnitude

• Hillshading data is automatically downloaded with all offline maps

• Or long press on map and select "More | Check available hillshading data"

The new hillshading can be used with all offline maps, I updated the description above.

Hillshading (and BRouter) data can be downloaded automatically with the Mapsforge and Freizeitkarte maps,
because Mapsforge and Freizeitkarte provide the map bounds, so hillshading (and BRouter) data can be found.

I have to see what is possible with OpenAndroMaps.

We can always check and download manually the hillshading (and BRouter) data, with below menu:

Probably the hillshading opacity, the new map engine is very powerful. 🙂

Update:

From now on also with the Freizeitkarte maps we will have automatic downloads of hillshading and BRouter data.

I contacted OpenAndroMaps to see what can be automated with their maps.

From now on also with the OpenAndroMaps maps we will have automatic downloads of hillshading and BRouter data.

Mapsforge community contributed a new hillshading algorithm
without gray shades where there are no slopes.

It will be included in the next Cruiser update.

Did this new algorithm make the hill shading opacity setting obsolete?
It is gone in Cruiser 5.0.0-b8...

It works differently, don't know if we even need such setting and how much it can change the map.

You can compare the hillshading and tell me how each version looks to you.
(it's easier on desktop)

Is it possible to display hillshading even with a lower zoom? Maybe as part of the Woldmap!?

It could be possible, however it will need to download too many hillshading data files.
Hillshading is more useful when also seeing other natural data, like forests, lakes, etc.
These are available in the detailed offline maps of the countries.
