This overall LGTM! Do you think this would be a good opportunity to get rid of the unsafe code as well, or is that out of scope for this PR?

Out of scope. Seems like it should be straightforward to not only remove unsafe but also significantly reduce the amount of code here by utilizing Guid, spans, etc. That said, I don't actually know how meaningful it is to rewrite this type. This particular PR just came about from my looking through interpolated string-related things and seeing this.
