Internally, there have been reports of strange issues with our focus restoration mechanics. Upon doing a deep dive, it seems the issue is related to
onBeforeBlur.Specifically, the issue relates to how the
onBeforeBlurevent currently propagates through the React tree. Most events have a simple during propagation and dispatch as they only occur outside React's commit phase when the tree has fully been realized, but this is not true foronBeforeBlur, which occurs during the commit phase. The fact we do this during the commit phase is part of the design, so we can't change that – however, it does mean we should take into account the fact we currently propagate the event through nodes that are about to be hidden/removed.We can get around this and skip nodes during propagation that are hidden/removed by adding a field to the
beforeblurevent itself, giving information to the propagation/dispatching logic, so it knows to skip certain nodes. This seemed the simplest route, and one that works with both the old and new reconcilers. I originally checked the fiber nodes each time during event propagation, but that was problematic because it leaked the heuristics of the different reconcilers (and we have a different mechanism for deletions in the new one). So this approach seems sane and upon internal testing, fixes a bunch of issues we're seeing.
