We don't have a one stop shot, deep dive into all of the options available through the Places API and it'd be a good addition to the notebooks.

What are all of the options that need to be highlighted for this? I put a notebook together showing off some simple contextily operations as part of a geopandas tutorial, which includes a handful of calls via the Places API towards the end (at different scales). I am happy to extend that handful for the docs, if it looks like a useful starting point.

Thanks very much for chipping in and nice demo notebook!

Thanks also for bringing it up, I see now it probably wasn't the clearest what this issue is about. My initial sense is to provide a deep dive into the Places API. A tentative list would include:

  • Creating a Place object (how, what options there are, etc.)
  • What does a Place object contain? 90% of the times one wants it to .plot() but Place objects allow you to extract a bit more (bbox of the area, zoom, etc.). It'd be really good to show all of these minor details that can be handy in a place
  • Output options. Again, the .plot() is the most obvious one, but one can also save data into GeoTiff, for example

The other feature this notebook should have is a clear focus on the Places API. Other bits are/can be covered on other notebooks.

Does this help? Happy to expand and help out if you'd want to prepare something along these lines :-)

Many thanks for creating the examples @darribas. I came across this issue after reading the Places docs: Would it be possible to add an example to add a place manually?

E.g. sometimes, a place cannot be found, but I'd still like to work with the places object. How would I initialize a Place from scratch, without search - e.g. by defining a name and a bbox?

This is just a comment, since this issue is not closed - perhaps someone may consider it when working on this further. Unfortunately, being new to contextily, I have no answer to share yet.
