The sidebar was not working anymore because of a sidebar enhancement in the theme (pydata/pydata-sphinx-theme#248). This is fixed by specifying our sidebar template in the conf.py (so it's actually also cleaner right now).
In addition, I simplified some of our custom css to use the new CSS variables provided by the theme.
With those changes, the docs look good for me locally.
