We have experienced an issue caused by the batching of updates in RFC 1164. This batching can cause the DNS update messages to be greater than 512 bytes which many firewalls will drop.

There are a couple of options that could be done to fix this:

  • Make the functionality configurable
  • Switch to use TCP when the update size is > 512 bytes as per the DNS spec
