What would you like to be added:

external-dns has an articulated goal of being a drop-in replacement of kOps dns-controller.

As far as I can tell, there are two features that are missing for that.

  • Support dns.alpha.kubernetes.io/external and dns.alpha.kubernetes.io/external annotations. This can be a good extension to external-dns existing nodeport service and node source features by controlling whether the node's internal or external IP should be used.
  • Support for gossip as a DNS provider. This requires external-dns to join the gossip cluster, which may be more obtrusive than other dns-providers.

Why is this needed:

This was one of the early goals of external-dns.

If any of the above functionality is interesting, I would be happy to draft up a PR.

It would be nice to get some feedback on this.
Let me know if more details are needed.

The Kubernetes project currently lacks enough contributors to adequately respond to all issues and PRs.

This bot triages issues and PRs according to the following rules:

  • After 90d of inactivity, lifecycle/stale is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/stale was applied, lifecycle/rotten is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/rotten was applied, the issue is closed

You can:

  • Mark this issue or PR as fresh with /remove-lifecycle stale
  • Mark this issue or PR as rotten with /lifecycle rotten
  • Close this issue or PR with /close
  • Offer to help out with Issue Triage

Please send feedback to sig-contributor-experience at kubernetes/community.

I think we can consider this one implemented. We are lacking gossip support still, but we are thinking of ways we can implement similar functionality without changes in external-dns.

Maybe one thing that is missing is updating some docs in this area?
