YouTube Audio Library

To access, go to YouTube, and on the left hand side, click on Your videos.

The Terms of Service state:

You're free to use this audio track in any of your videos, including videos that you monetise. No attribution is required. YouTube may credit the artist and link the Audio Library from your video. You may not make available, distribute or perform the music files from this library separately from videos and other content into which you have incorporated these music files (e.g. standalone distribution of these files is not permitted).

Furthermore, the Terms and Conditions state:

Music from this library is intended solely for use by you in videos and other content that you create.

AudioJungle by Envato

Both types of licences state:

You can’t re-distribute the Item as a sound effect, as stock, in a tool or template, or with source files. You can’t do this with an Item either on its own or bundled with other items, even if you modify the Item. You also can’t re-distribute the Item as-is or with superficial modifications.

Just FYI. This source has more to do with music than with sound effects (although there are sound effects indeed). However, I can't seem to find any war-themed music in the mould of Two Steps From Hell. It's also a little expensive.

The licensing agreement states:

The license expressly forbids resale, re-licensing, or other distribution of my music, either as is, or any modification thereof.

This source came up in my original search on Google, but unfortunately seems to be quite limited.

All free!! (The section on open-source considerations does not apply.) Use mobile phone rather than laptop to download.

Open-Source considerations

The fact that distribution of royalty-free music/sound effects is largely illegal/forbidden is problematic, because this repository is open-sourced. There are two ways to get around this issue:

  1. Make the repository private.
  2. Put the royalty-free music/sound effects in the .gitignore file. This means that anybody who clones this repository will definitely not be able to build it without first removing all ID references to the royalty-free music/sound effects. We would have to tell people so in the README.

Update: final sounds

After taking into consideration our conclusions with ExoPlayer, below are the sounds we intend to use for our app:

  • Cards (YouTube Audio Library); trimmed to 10 s
  • Wolves (SoundBible): Public Domain, from fws.gov; trimmed to 8 s
  • Crickets (SoundBible): Personal Use Only, from Unknown; trimmed to 10 s
  • Rain (SoundBible): Attribution 3.0, from Mark DiAngelo; trimmed to 19 s
  • Rainforest (SoundBible): Public Domain, from glorysunz; trimmed to 18 s
  • Rainstorm (SoundBible): Attribution 3.0, from Mike Koenig; trimmed to 16 s
  • Fireplace (SoundBible): Attribution 3.0, from Daniel Simion; trimmed to 13 s

The Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License means that I can use a given file for personal stuff as well as for commercial stuff, and even change it however I like, but I need to give the owner credit.

Note: It seems that the 32-bit emulator still has problems with the Rain and Rainforest sounds. I'm prepared to let this issue be (and not fix it).
