https://docs.renovatebot.com/ruby/ definitely implies that Ruby is supported, but doesn't give a lot of detail about what versions of Ruby are supported. Ruby as a language actually has several underlying implemenation options (called "platforms") and often it's very important that the bundle command is using the right platform.

We're seeing issues where Renovate seems to decide to run its own platform, rather than the one specified in our .ruby-version file and specified by the :platform :jruby in our Gemfile.

Where Renovate is attempting to update the dependency specified here:

On a local checkout, running bundle update bigdecimal works just fine, but that's likely because which bundle shows that it's using a bundler that comes from the ruby version set by rbenv (controlled by .ruby-version) which is part of JRuby.

$ which bundle
/opt/homebrew/opt/rbenv/shims/bundle
$ rbenv version
jruby-9.4.7.0 (set by /Users/seanstory/Desktop/Dev/crawler/.ruby-version)

I expect that Renovate is just using MRI (C) Ruby.
Is this configurable at all?

Please don't raise bugs if you're unsure and asking a question. Instead create a reproduction repo demonstrating the problem and ask a question - we'll instruct you further. If there is no explicit mention of jruby in docs and it requires different behavior to standard Ruby/bundler then it needs a feature request

If JRuby was expected to work, it would have been a bug. :) Sounds like it's not necessarily expected to work.
