Can you file a near-equivalent PR against the beta branch, so that we can run bors try there and then produce a dev-static beta to make sure this works end-to-end? I'd rather not find that out when we promote branches in a few weeks.

Thanks! I think the experiment looks good. This won't work with rustup until we change it's parsing logic for toolchain identifiers, and make a new release, but that seems expected. For now this will give future betas the right format so that rustup just works with them.
